Mmm...Donuts: Domain name company eyes a diverse Web

If the team at domain registry company Donuts has its way, Web users will be able to enjoy domain names as they do doughnuts -- for the variety.

The company announced today that multi-billion dollar private equity and venture funds are investing more than $100 million in capital to aid Donuts' quest for a more diverse Web. Donuts has applied for 307 top-level-domains or TLDs (the word to the right of the dot) that the company said will be more descriptive.

"The Internet is ready for some diversity," Mason Cole, Donuts' VP of communications and industry relations, said, … Read more

Iriver Blank Sound Donut looks yummy, tastes a tad pricey

O-shaped speakers are apparently in fashion these days. I recently reviewed Philips' SoundRing and now I notice Iriver is about to release its Sound Donut here in the U.S.

The speaker comes in a chocolate flavor, as well as a version that's a bit chocolate and mostly vanilla. As you might have already guessed, this is a Bluetooth speaker and it has a built-in microphone for making cell phone calls.… Read more

Gingerbread dominates current Android devices

Google updated its popular platform version chart this week, giving a current snapshot of the popularity of the various Android releases.

As expected, Gingerbread (Android 2.3x) leads the way with a combined 55.5 percent share of the market, followed by Froyo at 30.4 percent and 2-year-old Eclair at 8.5 percent. Trailing behind are Honeycomb (3.3 percent) and very marginal showings for Donut (version 1.6), Cupcake (version 1.5), and Ice Cream Sandwich (version 4).

The latest chart marks the first time we've seen Ice Cream Sandwich make an impact, even if it is … Read more

Like waffle, like doughnut

Inspiration can be found in many places. To some, it is the beauty of a particularly colorful sunset. Or perhaps a serene lake can be used to glean nuggets of realization as if they were plucked from the sky like stars. Others find inspiration in their fellow man, looking to community leaders and advocates of peace to draw upon. And then others find inspiration in a waffle iron.

One very famous example of a waffle iron forging inspiration is the story of how Nike got its start with the sole of its first prototype shoe being cast in a waffle … Read more

Mini Donut Factory makes edible angel halos

Dear Krispy, I'm breaking up with you. Thanks to the new Automatic Mini Donut Factory, there is no longer any reason to venture out into the world.

Safety windows let you observe the action without accidentally frying your fingers. It even has a component called the "donut slide."… Read more

Crave 33: Robot babies drive us up the wall (podcast)

On this week's Crave, a slew of robots--especially two undeniably creepy baby models--have Jasmine so worked up she's lost her voice. Luckily, we manage to move on from the creepy to the craveable with a new Hot Wheels track setup that mounts on the wall, a Darth Vader CD player that's more about form than function, and an LED-bedazzled surfboard that leads to some scary-but-cool nighttime wave-riding. Also, the military gets its hands on a sweet high-tech gun and Japan cranks out a DIY gummi sushi kit. And what's making us fat this week? Not pickle-flavored toothpaste, that's for sure...

Eclair holds slim margin over Froyo in latest Android report

Android phones running OS 2.1 or 2.2 now represent more than three quarters of all handsets on the market, says Google's latest platform version report. Though handsets with OS 1.5 or 1.6 haven't disappeared yet, yesterday's report has led some to suggest that fragmentation is winding down.

Released monthly, the report breaks down the various versions of Android to help developers decide how they want to code their applications. And, of course, it's a great way to gauge platform fragmentation.

Android 2.1 "Eclair" still leads the pack at 40.… Read more

Doughnut hole maker fills in the gap

It's not hard to find a good doughnut. When it comes to availability, the delectable little treats are almost as common as coffee. No matter where you live, chances are somewhere close by a doughnut purveyor has opened up shop. If for some strange quirk of fate, this doesn't happen to be, then the local supermarket is likely to have a counter where the treats are available, and if not, surely the shelves are stocked with the boxed variety. As prevalent as doughnuts may be, however, finding the right one at the right time is not necessarily a … Read more

Samsung Behold II gets first and only software update

After months of waiting, the Samsung Behold II is finally leaving Android 1.5 Cupcake behind. Unfortunately, however, this update only takes the phone as far as 1.6 Donut. And that's all it's going to get. Yes, you read that right.

Though most Android owners are concerned about 2.1 Eclair and even 2.2 Froyo, this T-Mobile handset is only now seeing last year's Donut. Samsung's official statement on the phone is that it is "not upgradable" beyond 1.6 likely because of unforeseen growth in the platform.
