Apple quietly discontinues white MacBook

Along with releasing a flurry of new products this morning, Apple has also apparently discontinued its white MacBook.

Following today's announcements of a new MacBook Air and Mac Mini, the white MacBook was no longer available on Apple's online store. That notebook, which boasted a 13-inch screen and came in at $999, is, however, selling in Apple's online refurbished marketplace for $849.

So far, Apple hasn't commented on what happened to the white MacBook, and the company did not immediately respond to CNET's request for comment. However, it might have simply been a case of … Read more

R.I.P. PSP Go, we hardly knew ye

Sony has confirmed with CNET that production has officially ended on the PSP Go, the company's UMD-less portable system that debuted in late 2009. The Go was undeniably sexy, improving upon the traditional PSP's overall design.

Aside from its sleek looks, solid feel, and slide-out screen, the Go never really took off. Perhaps it was the fact that there was no practical solution for previous PSP owners with UMD games. Barnes & Noble discontinuing 3G Nook?

We're not sure quite what to make of this rumor, but Engadget is reporting that Barnes & Noble is phasing out the Nook 3G.

Engadget doesn't cite a specific person or anonymous source, but says it, "Received hard evidence from within B&N that the Nook is being discontinued, with sales to seemingly continue until stock is exhausted." The "outfit" (we assume that means Barnes & Noble) is apparently "encouraging retail partners to not send out any 'bulk requests' for the Nook 3G, as there simply 'will not be sufficient quantities to fulfill those orders.'"

The article then goes on to say that "the company never actually received a huge amount of Nook 3G bulk orders to begin with, so maybe Wi-Fi really is everywhere these days."

As we said, it's a little hard to decipher what this means, but we should point out that Engadget's story about the Nook Color getting an update to Android 2.2 and possibly blowing up if you rooted it (installed custom Android firmware) ended up being just a tad off base. However, this latest story was written by veteran Engadget reporter Darren Murph, so we're taking it more seriously.

One thing worth pointing out is that it would seem odd for Barnes & Noble to discontinue the 3G/Wi-Fi version of the Nook and tell customers they could only get the Wi-Fi-only version.… Read more

Sony dropping 80GB PS3 in Japan?

The rumors of the impending arrival of a new PlayStation 3 are growing more fierce as new hints seem to turn up almost daily in the blogsphere. The latest discovery to pop up is what appears to be an internal document from 7-Eleven--which sells games in Japan--that suggests Sony may be about to discontinue the 80GB PS3 in its home country.

iGoogle: Consistency versus innovation

Earlier this week, iPhone Atlas reported that Google had quietly removed the iGoogle Web site formatted for the iPhone. The iPhone-formatted version of iGoogle now redirects users to the generic Google Web site formatted for mobile devices.

In response to our query regarding the demise of this popular Web site for iPhone users, a Google representative said:

iGoogle optimization discontinued for iPhone

Without warning, Google has quietly removed the iGoogle Web site formatted for the iPhone. The iPhone-formatted version of iGoogle now redirects users to the generic Google Web site formatted for mobile devices.

The version of the page that was unique to the iPhone, optimized for the Mobile Safari browser, and offered sections that were expandable or collapsible, used to display custom gadgets.

Despite the iGoogle move, the search giant appears to still be developing its Google applications for Apple's smartphone, including enhancements for voice searches, Google Earth exploration, and Google Maps directions and Street View.

Registered users of Adobe software received the following note today in their in-boxes:

Sony kills off the 20GB PS3

Sony is axing the lower-end model of the PlayStation 3, according to the gaming blog Joystiq. The blog quotes Sony saying the 20GB version will no longer be shipped to North American retailers.

The PS3 was initially launched last November amid quite a bit of fanfare. Sony was asking $499 for the 20GB and $599 for the 60GB. The $100 discount on the 20GB clearly wasn't all that attractive as Dave Karraker of Sony America reports that the 60GB PS3s outsold the lower-end models more than 9 to 1.
