3D printer to carve out world's first full-size building

Sure, we've heard of 3D-printed iPhone cases, dinosaur bones, and even a human fetus -- but something massive, like a building?

This is exactly what architect Janjaap Ruijssenaars has been working on. The Dutch native is planning to build what he calls a "Landscape House." This structure is two-stories and is laid out in a figure-eight shape. The idea is that this form can borrow from nature and also seamlessly fit into the outside world.

Ruijssenaars describes it on his Web site as "one surface folded in an endless mobius band," where "floors transform … Read more

Researchers who hack the Mac OS

It was summer 2005. Dino Dai Zovi walked into a Manhattan Starbucks, ordered a coffee, sat down, and opened up his laptop.

Before his coffee was cold he had found a local privilege escalation vulnerability in Mac OS X Tiger, which could allow people to elevate from normal user to full super user, and had written code that could exploit the hole.

"I just think that I got lucky, but that's what I always think when I find a bug that quickly," he said in an interview on Wednesday.

Dai Zovi has been exploiting Macs for a … Read more

Snow Leopard could level security playing field

Friday's release of the new version of the Mac OS, dubbed Snow Leopard, could include some security features that would make it secure, or at least push it closer to the level of security that Vista and Windows 7 have, experts said this week.

Contrary to popular Mac fanboy belief, Macintosh is not more secure from a software standpoint than modern Windows; it's merely safer to use because malware writers prefer to target the platform with the biggest install base, according to Charlie Miller and Dino Dai Zovi, co-authors of The Mac Hacker's Handbook, which came out this spring.… Read more

The Dino 5, 'What about 10?': Free MP3 of the Day

Instrumental hip-hop's other 5--the Jurassic one--makes a helpful reference point for this supergroup. Not only is Chali 2na in on both, but also Dino's bouncy beats and wisecracking rhymes are squarely J5. They're also ideal for the project's goal: rap that's suitable for children but credible for adults.

Exploiting QuickTime flaws in 'Second Life'

WASHINGTON--Researchers Charlie Miller of Independent Security Evaluators, and Dino Dai Zovi, turned their attention to Second Life during a Saturday morning presentation at ShmooCon, an East Coast computer hacking conference. The researchers didn't exploit a flaw within Linden Labs' Second Life, but within QuickTime. They showed how an attacker could make money stealing from innocent Second Life victims.

Miller and Zovi are both experienced with flaws within Apple products. Miller published the first Apple iPhone flaw shortly after its release. At last year's CanSecWest security conference, Zovi exploited a QuickTime flaw to win a "PWN to Own&… Read more

A trend too far: designer Mimobots

Not that we needed it, but here's even more hard evidence that the fashion gadget trend is out of control: designer Mimobots.

It's one thing for the novelty USB drives to commemorate games and anime characters, but the latest version is designed by New York artist Dino Alberto in the "Swirl" line of the Mimobot Core Series 2, according to GeekSugar. There's even a hoodie available for them, according to GeekSugar. But that's just wrong.

New info on rumored Ferrari Dino

There are few gadgets that make this Crave expert's heart beat fast. A Ferrari at a potentially reasonable price point is one of them.

AutoWeek seems to have new info about Ferrari's plans to re-introduce the Dino ('67 206 GT and '69 246 GT models below), an entry-level Ferrari that was originally produced between 1967 and the mid-seventies.

The original Ferrari Dino, nicknamed for Enzo Ferrari's son Alfredino, was the first "mass-produced" car in the Ferrari collection. The body was designed by Battista Pininfarina and held the V6 engine designed by Vittorio Jano, famed Ferrari … Read more

Dino resurrected

No, Dean Martin isn't coming back from the dead (as nice as that would be). Inside Line has a story about Ferrari reviving the Dino, the curvy model Ferrari built from 1968 to 1974 and named after Enzo Ferrari's son. (A 1973 Dino GTS is pictured here.) According to the story, Ferrari needs an entry-level model. The new Dino will be a front-engine car powered by a 4.0-liter V-8.
