Today we're talking about a study from address book site Plaxo that claims 19 percent of people have accidentally let their phones slip into the toilet. We also chat about Captain America: The First Avenger, Super 8, Amy Winehouse, and the role of Modern Warfare 2 and World of Warcraft in this weekend's violence in Oslo.

The 404 Digest for Episode 867

The 404 704: Where having kids only makes you hotter (podcast)

Whether it's the dude showing off his abs or a co-worker inviting you to happy hour drinks at Dave and Busters, we all have friends on Facebook we wouldn't mind disappearing. Wave bye to these faux friends, because November 17 is National UnFriend Day, where everyone is invited to trim the friend fat...on Facebook, that is.

The creator of the new holiday is late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel, who recently declared war on all Facebook friends you don't actually care about in "real life." Genuine friendships are sacred, according to Kimmel, and he thinks social networks like Facebook that let you "friend" anyone are cheapening the sentiment.

On the other hand, if you're curious to know who's unfriended YOU on Facebook, well...there's an app for that. It's called UnFriend Finder, and it's a new extension for the Firefox Web browser that tells you which of your friends are being unfaithful and exactly when the online break-up occurred. Just be sure to install it prior to November 17, because it won't retroactively show you ex-friends from the past.

Hopefully Natali Del Conte won't unfriend The 404, or else we wouldn't have opportunities like today to invite her on the show to tell us more technical details than we ever thought existed about diapers, including her 30-day cloth diaper challenge...don't feel left out if you don't have a kid, we're planning a similar diaper competition among ourselves.

After the break and a video voice mail from Kentucky From Neil, we want to warn all of our male listeners using laptops about scrotal hyperthermia. According to an experimental study on 29 healthy male volunteers, varying the position of a laptop won't help the issue, although the conclusion does recommend a laptop pad and/or adjusting your seating stance to prevent long-term damage. Safety first on The 404!

Amazon changes Diapers.com ownership

Amazon is acquiring the parent company of Diapers.com.

The online retailer announced today that it will pay $500 million in cash for Quidsi and assume $45 million in debt. The price tag for the New Jersey-based Quidsi is about $200 million higher than its valuation following its latest round of venture funding, according to The Wall Street Journal, which reported on the impending acquisition over the weekend, as did Fortune.

"I'm not sure which is more unpleasant--changing diapers, paying too much for them, or running out of them," said Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos in a statement. &… Read more

Diaper companies wrap up funding

Two companies that deal in diapers have attracted notable funding within the past week, leaving Dan Primack of Private Equity Hub to muse about the rise of a "diaper bubble."

gDiapers, which makes eco-friendly diapers, announced yesterday that it raised an undisclosed sum from 2x Consumer Products Growth Partners and Golden Seeds angel investors. gDiapers' hybrid diapers, perhaps the Prius of the Pampers world, consist of a flushable, compost-ready insert that fits inside decorative cloth panties.

Online marketplace Diapers.com raised $7 million in Series B funding last week, mostly through Bessemer Venture Partners. The Web site sells … Read more

'Potty Watch' doesn't bowl us over

Maybe it's just us, but we've never had to force our kids to go to the bathroom. It's always been more of an issue having them not exercise their bodily functions at inopportune times, such as the middle of a movie, in the car on a road trip, or a downtown bus station where the last thing you'd want to do is set foot (or anything else) in the public restroom.

So were somewhat disappointed to learn that the "Potty Watch" is aimed at teaching tots when to go, rather than when not to. … Read more

The baby monitor finally slims down

It doesn't make a whole lot of sense to us either: Baby monitors are supposed to let you hear every whimper no matter where you are, presuming that you haven't gone out for groceries. And yet many monitors on the market today still come in sizes reminiscent of those 5-pound "mobile" phones of the late '80s, as Slashgear rightly points out.

Attempting to bridge that gap in logic is the "NScessity Compact Audio Monitor," which U.K.-based Babyworld describes as "about the size of an egg" and having a range of … Read more

Baby timer helps parents think

This may seem silly if you haven't experienced parental sleep deprivation, but anyone who's cared for a newborn for any length of time will undoubtedly understand its usefulness. The "Itzbeen Timer" tells you how long it's been (get it?) since a baby's last nap, feeding, diaper change or anything else you're sure to forget a minute later.

Could a pencil and paper do the trick too? Sure, but that assumes you can remember your own name after the first week back from the hospital. In addition to alerting you for each appointed task (… Read more

Car seat keeps babies high and dry

It's not exactly the highest tech, but many of humankind's greatest advances have come with few moving parts. We think this is one of them: the "Pad Concept" baby car seat.

This ingenious invention allows frazzled parents to change their kids' diapers while they're still in the seat. The seat reclines and swivels, turning it into an instant changing station that can be positioned for easy access. If you don't have children, this won't sound very interesting, but those of us who do could well find this a life-changing (and Huggies-changing) experience.

It'… Read more
