The 404 583: Where we're switching back to Hotmail (podcast)

We've always noticed something a little off about our dear Wilson G. Tang, but today's episode finally kicks the door open on the severity of his addiction to technology. Our frightening discovery begins with a CNN article that exposes the Apple iPad and other brightly lit devices as the reason why some people have trouble sleeping at night. The hypothesis belongs to Oakland resident J.D. Moyer, who set out to prove that using devices with backlit displays in bed can actually reset a person's internal sleep clock and even trick your brain into thinking that it'… Read more

The 404 576: Where milk was a bad choice (podcast)

The air conditioner in the studio where we record the show might be broken, but we're sweating it out this morning to bring you this Friday's episode of The 404 Podcast.

Yesterday, we talked to Jasmine France about her new Tech Dos and Don'ts column on the MP3 Insider blog and we all left the show convinced there's an online dating Web site out there for everyone's interests, no matter how niche...and we were right!

There's a new e-Harmony-style dating Web site called Cupidtino marketed specifically for Apple fanboys and girls to meet up and share a love for all things Apple...and hopefully each other! The site is still in beta and set to launch next month; everyone's invited, but with a catch--the only way you can access the site is through Safari and iPhone/iPad apps! Apologies in advance for Wilson's silence during this segment--that profile ain't gonna write itself.

Google already occupies a big part of everyone's past and present lives on the Internet, but the company is now setting its sights on predicting the future. It is heavily investing in a company called Recorded Future, a Web application that gathers data from financial markets, geopolitical news, industry changes, public figures, technology news, and others to create a rough sketch of the future.

If it works, Google stands to gain valuable insight into the ever-changing tech industry, but we tend to agree with sites like Mashable, which predicts the app will have the "same level of accuracy...as a weather report. Google Weather, anyone?

The second half of the show is all about predicting the immediate future of the podcast, which is pretty easy when you've been doing it everyday for three years. We have a special treat from today's e-mails from the public from listener Jack W., who sent us a video of his high school's annual lightsaber battle!

Only slightly less nerdy than LARPing, over 400 kids gather every year in the quad at Brophy College Prepatory to bang their light-up sticks together in celebration of their commitment to a movie that came out 20 years before their birth. Happy fighting, kids!

Have a great weekend, and don't forget to call us up at 1-866-404-CNET over the weekend and leave a voice mail. If it's good, we'll be happy to play it on the show!

Seeking single, white, Mac-lovin' female

Can two competing operating systems really make it work in the game of love? Maybe not. Maybe the world really does need Cupidtino, the Apple fans-only dating site discussed in Thursday's episode of Loaded.

My first reaction to this site was a resounding, "Oh brother!" I can't stand unabashed Apple love, even though I am exclusively a Mac user. However, being raised a Jehovah's Witness (which I am not any longer, but that is a topic outside the range of this post), I was taught not to date outside of my religion.

Later in life, … Read more

The e-Harmony for Apple fanboys (and girls)

I have heard Apple described as a cult, though I fail to see the resemblance between Steve Jobs and David Koresh. I have heard those who are not part of the Apple fold rail (sometimes quite loudly) against its power, its beauty, its uncritical worship of style without, um, flash.

Now, some clever people, perhaps mining the more positive aspects of eugenics, have created a site where Apple fanboys and girls can meet, love, and perhaps even procreate, knowing they have something powerful that binds them together.

Can love for a brand lead to a wedding band? Cupidtino (and what a lovely name that is), wants to find out. It exists so that you, the Apple fanboy or girl, can meet one of your own kind.

Need I even mention that this forward-thinking enterprise has been created by those who adore everything Apple for those who adore everything Apple? Yes, it is to launch next month and be exclusively available through Safari and iPhone and iPad apps. Would you have imagined anything else?

Cupidtino's creators (two developers and a designer with backgrounds at Yahoo and--gasp--Google and Microsoft) are very clear about the gaping market gap they see before them. "Diehard Mac and Apple fans often have a lot in common--personalities, creative professions, a similar sense of style and aesthetics, taste, and of course a love for technology," says the Web site.

But of course they're referring to just any ordinary technology. The site claims, "We believe these are enough reasons for two people to meet and fall in love, and so we created the first Mac-inspired dating site to help you find other Machearts around you."… Read more
