Google unveils app for managing off-site workers

Google today unveiled a location-based, check-in style service designed to help businesses oversee and direct their employees in the field.

Google Maps Coordinate could, for example, be used by a dispatcher at a utility company to find out which of its repair trucks was closest to a downed power line, assign that driver to the repair task, and issue appropriate instructions, Google said in a blog post.

Mobile staffers download the Coordinate app to their smartphone and can then share their real-time location with their dispatcher or manager. They can also use the app to check in when they've … Read more

GeoSetter edits digital image metadata

GeoSetter is a free tool for editing digital image metadata, but with a special emphasis on geographical data. It includes a Google Map feature that shows where the picture was taken. Of course, not every image contains geo data, but GeoSetter also edits EXIF and other image data. In fact, it's one of the most capable image data tools we've seen, and the embedded Google Map makes it fun, too.

GeoSetter's basic interface is divided into two halves. On the left, there are file browser and image preview panes, and on the right is an embedded Google … Read more

IP czar targets overseas pirate sites

U.S. President Barack Obama isn't the only government official who wants to smack down copyright infringement and counterfeiting.

During a hearing before the House of Representatives' Committee on Foreign Affairs, some congressional lawmakers on Wednesday said they want the U.S. government to retaliate against countries that turn a blind eye to online piracy, as well as people who peddle knockoffs of American products here and abroad.

The Obama administration has made copyright enforcement a priority, but Wednesday's hearing made it clear that thwarting piracy and counterfeiting has bipartisan support. The film and music industries have claimed … Read more

Biden to file sharers: 'Piracy is theft'

Do people commit theft when they share unauthorized copies of film and music over the Internet? U.S. Vice President Joe Biden thinks so.

"We used to have a problem in this town saying this," Biden told reporters Thursday at a press conference in Washington, D.C. "But piracy is theft. Clean and simple. It's smash and grab. It ain't no different than smashing a window at Tiffany's and grabbing [merchandise]."

Biden spoke to the media alongside Victoria Espinel, the U.S. intellectual property enforcement coordinator, to introduce the government's strategy on protectingRead more

Case management clunker

PsychReport is a clinical case management tool for professionals in the field of psychology. Although the program seems to have a lot of useful features, it's ultimately undermined by its clunky interface.

We were turned off by the program almost immediately when we opened it and the creepy Microsoft Sam text-to-speech voice announced "PsychReport." From there, it only got worse; the program announces the name of each module as it's opened, and there doesn't seem to be any way to turn this annoying and pointless feature off. The main menu is a mix of icons … Read more

Copyright debate heats up over Obama appointments

As industry and public interest groups wait for the president to fill the remaining positions in his administration, such as the new position of intellectual-property enforcement coordinator, opposing sides of the copyright debate are speaking up.

The Copyright Alliance, along with 40 other groups representing intellectual-property holders, sent a letter (PDF) to President Obama on Monday arguing that intellectual-property protection stimulates creativity and creates jobs.

The letter was sent in response to an earlier letter, sent by 19 different groups, that urged the president to choose administration officials who "reflect the diversity of stakeholders affected by IP policy." … Read more
