Sony takes the wraps off PlayStation 4 hardware

Sony has finally taken the wraps off the look and design of its next-generation PlayStation.

At its E3 press conference Monday night, the consolemaker provided a quick reveal of the PS4 box, which looks a tad bit larger than the current PS3 design.

Sony gave people a teaser of the console's design near the end of May, on the eve of Microsoft's Xbox One reveal, and had previously shown off pieces of hardware like the controller and new Eye accessory at the original PS4 reveal back in February.

A 16-year-old programmer named Ash Bhat is attending Apple's WWDC next week for free. How? He created an iOS app that earned him one of 150 scholarships.

Tickets to Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference sold out within two minutes after going on sale in April. But the company held out hope for student developers, promising scholarships for 150 of those able to create an app that would knock Apple's socks off.

Siri-like calendar app Tempo eyes other platforms

Tempo, the calendar app that uses Siri-like artificial intelligence to schedule meetings and dial in on conference calls, is racking up user data to decide where it will land next.

The app, created by Tempo AI, highlighted its popular conference call features on Wednesday. While the company -- which comes from SRI International, the same place that created Apple's Siri -- won't share its user numbers, it revealed that people have made 1 million one-tap conference calls with the app since its launch in February.

Apple names former EPA admin as environmental officer

Apple's hired a new top level executive to oversee its environmental efforts.

Apple CEO Tim Cook on Tuesday announced that the company's hired Lisa Jackson, the former administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), to guide its environmental footprint.

Cook, who dropped the news during an on-stage interview at the D11 conference, noted that he didn't know Jackson's formal title, but that she'd be reporting directly to him and would be coordinating "environmental efforts" across the company. CNET has reached out to Apple for more information.

According to Apple CEO Tim Cook, the company's just been too focused on trying to get it right on one product before expanding.

Students who impress Apple by creating their own app have a chance at attending this year's Worldwide Developers Conference for free.

Apple's WWDC 2013 scholarship will reward 150 winners with one free ticket apiece to join the conference, which runs from June 10 to June 14 in San Francisco.
