Frontline Commando is a nice arcade-type third-person shooter

Frontline Commando is a third-person shoot-em-up game based on the premise that you're behind enemy lines and getting payback. While not exactly a novel concept, it is pretty well done here. Frontline Commando installs easily enough, and when launched the graphics and soundtrack are solid. You see the back of your avatar and an aiming reticule, and the gameplay consists almost entirely of putting the crosshairs on someone or something and blasting it to pieces.

Frontline Commando is a free download, but to really enjoy the game you'll have to purchase add-ins. These add-ins add up quite quickly. … Read more

Swing your way to glory

Hook Worlds is the latest sequel to one of our all-time favorite game franchises in the escape genre on iOS, Hook Champ. Though there are four different game types in Hook Worlds, the object remains mostly the same as in its predecessors: use your grappling hook to swing from object to object to achieve the longest distance possible. The graphics are smooth with high frame rates as you swing through caves, under rooftops, and over hot lava. Unlike the earlier games in the genre, Hook Worlds has dynamically created maps with no end--you simply need to last as long as … Read more

Casio G'zOne Commando heads to Verizon

Casio has typically made rugged feature phones for Verizon Wireless (the G'zOne Brigade, the G'zOne Ravine, etc.), so it was a welcome surprise to see the company finally branch out to Android smartphones with the Casio G'zOne Commando.

Like its brethren, the Commando is designed to withstand a variety of environmental hazards with its tough and durable construction that should protect it against immersion, rain, shock, dust, vibration, humidity, and more. It even comes with the G'zGear software that includes outdoor-friendly tools like a compass, a walking counter, a tidal graph, a thermometer, and a tool for tracking the phases of the moon.

More than that, it ships with Android 2.2 and boasts robust security features to support corporate e-mail. Other features include Wi-Fi, a 5-megapixel camera with autofocus, an LED light, stereo Bluetooth, GPS, and the ability to act as a mobile hot spot with up to five devices. If you want 4G/LTE, however, keep looking, as the Commando has 3G/EV-DO instead. The interface also features XT9 and T9 trace input for typing and a menu that snaps out for frequently used apps.

The Casio G'zOne Commando will be available starting April 28 for $199.99 with a new two-year agreement.… Read more

Swing your way to victory

Super QuickHook is the sequel to one of our favorite iPhone games of 2009, adding brand-new locations, new obstacles, and more fun and addictive gameplay.

As with Hook Champ, the object of the game is to swing from obstacle to obstacle using a grappling hook you shoot ahead of you by touching the screen to swing through levels. Super QuickHook adds a scrollable level-selection screen with new maps and environments, OpenFeint connectivity for high scores and leaderboards, and a new Endless Mode that challenges you to see how long you can last ahead of an avalanche.

With Hook Champ's … Read more

Fancy to-do lists and a unique platform game: iPhone apps of the week

The evolution of the app store witnessed another milestone recently, with the release of a game that doubles as a very effective advertisement. One of my favorite iPhone games of the year, Firemint's Real Racing, just got a Lite version that doubles as a promotional tool for both the app and an outside company. Real Racing GTI (Free), sponsored by Volkswagen, lets you race on a few of the tracks of the full game using the 2010 Volkswagen GTI. You only get a small taste of the action in the full game, but it should be enough to help … Read more

Wii virtual console release for this week--'Super Turrican' stands alone

To say that the Virtual Console is "falling off" is an understatement. It's now been more than a month straight of less than three releases per week.

Super Turrican (1993, Super Nintendo, 800 Wii points): From Factor 5 came Super Turrican, a 2D platformer that reminded us a whole lot of Mega Turrican. Also, you'll find the addition of a grappling arm in Super Turrican, an homage to the game Bionic Commando--a classic title that you'll be able to play on Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network when it's released as Bionic Commando Rearmed. … Read more
