The high-end notebook graphics war is on for 2011. Nvidia was first to fire a shot a few weeks ago, unveiling the GeForce GTX 580M.

AMD has since counterpunched with the AMD Radeon HD 6990M, its new, most high-end laptop graphics card, which the company now claims, as Nvidia did weeks ago, is the "fastest notebook GPU." Nvidia GTX 580M top-end laptop graphics unveiled; already showing up in Origin and Alienware systems

Today Nvidia unveiled its latest high-end laptop GPUs, the GTX 570M and 580M. That's not a huge surprise: the new GTX cards round out the "500 series" of GT and GTX graphics that have been available throughout the year. One feature Nvidia's particularly touting is the GTX 580's Optimus automatic switching, which should offer up "5 hours of battery life in Facebook," in case you measure your juice through social networking.

Nvidia intros GeForce GTX 480M, 'world's fastest notebook GPU'

Graphics card maker Nvidia has revealed, via a corporate blog post, a new laptop GPU, called the GeForce GTX 480M. The company claims it will be the "world's fastest notebook GPU."

Using the same basic chip (GF100) and architecture ("Fermi") as its current desktop graphics cards, Nvidia calls the GTX 480M, "DirectX 11 done right for notebooks," and it will support standard Nvidia features such as PhysX and 3D Vision.

Intel cracks open Atom-based MID

Intel has posted a video showing the inside of a device using the Atom processor as it rolls out five new Atom chips at the Intel Developer Forum in Shanghai.

Intel Ultra Mobile guru, Uday Keshavdas, cracked open the back of a mobile Internet device (MID) to show where the Atom processor fits in--literally. (No teardown here. Cracking open the back of the device doesn't qualify.)

Quad-core Xtreme Notebook: too extreme?

After last week's post about Xtreme Notebooks squeezing a quad-core processor inside a laptop, another small laptop vendor, ProStar Computer, contacted me to say such a feat is impossible. In his email, the ProStar rep claims that Clevo, the manufacturer of the chassis used in the Xtreme Accelerator 917V, has not approved any quad-core processors for use inside the Clevo D900C.
