White House picks Twitter lawyer as Internet privacy officer

President Obama has picked Nicole Wong, Twitter's legal director, to be the White House's first chief privacy officer, CNET has learned.

Wong previously was a vice president and deputy general counsel at Google at its Mountain View, Calif., headquarters, where she managed a team of lawyers that worked with the company's engineers to review products before they launched. The reviews included privacy, copyright, and removal requests, which earned her a nickname of "The Decider" -- as recounted in a 2008 New York Times Magazine article.

Dell cites uncertain prospects for PCs, Windows 8 in SEC filing

Dell painted a somewhat bleak depiction of its prospects in a recent SEC filing.

In a 274-page filing on Friday, the PC maker indicated market and product challenges on several fronts. In the filing, Dell makes a case for accepting a $24.4 billion offer to go private so it can be in a better position to deal with the myriad challenges facing the company.

Those included "the deteriorating outlook for the PC market as a result of, among other things, smartphones and tablets cannibalizing PC sales," according to the filing.

NFL players tweet prayers, perspective after murder-suicide

NFL players and teams have turned to Twitter to express their sorrow after learning that Kansas City Chiefs player Jovan Belcher shot his girlfriend to death before turning the gun on himself.

The 25-year-old linebacker shot Kasandra Perkins, 22, with whom he had an infant daughter, this morning before driving to Arrowhead Stadium, where he shot himself to death in front of Chiefs staff, the Kansas City Police Department said.

T-Mobile USA is shaking up its marketing strategy, which includes the departure of veteran executive and chief marketing officer, Cole Brodman.

Brodman, who has held various positions and has been with T-Mobile for 17 years, will step down, effective May 25, according to the Dow Jones Newswires.

His departure comes as T-Mobile looks to retake its position in the wireless industry as the upstart and disruptive challenger. The carrier, a unit of Germany's Deutsche Telekom, recently took its once sweet television spokeswoman, Carly, and put her in leather and on a motorcycle, signalling a more aggressive, competitive stance.

Google is seen by many as the de facto standard for Internet search. But the company may not always be king of the castle, says famed Internet pioneer Vint Cerf.

Defections at Twitter are mounting. Not only is Chief Scientist Abdur Chowdhury the latest ranking technologist to resign from the San Francisco-based company, but two key board members are also stepping down.

Fred Wilson and Bijan Sabet, two of Twitter's earliest investors, will be leaving at the end of the month. Twitter confirmed this to Peter Kafka at AllThingsD. HTC's innovation chief bids adieu

HTC today confirmed its chief innovation officer, instrumental in helping build the company into the consumer brand it is today, left the company for "personal reasons."

Horace Luke, who HTC said "nurtured a culture of innovation," left in April. Scott Croyle, vice president of design, took over his responsibilities.

A company representative declined to specify what personal reasons meant.

Report: Nokia CTO on the outs in strategy spat

Nokia's chief technology officer may extend his current leave of absence into a permanent departure following a report from a Finnish newspaper that he's been unhappy with recent management decisions.

Citing information from two independent sources, the Helsingin Sanomat said that the CTO, Richard Green, will remain on his personal leave of absence until the end of the year but is unlikely to return to Nokia as a result of "differences of opinion over the company's strategy."
