2011 Grand Jeep Cherokee swaps soy foam for recycled foam

Chrysler has found a way to make use of 180,000 pounds of polyurethane foam that would otherwise end up in a landfill. And if you find yourself in a 2011 Grand Jeep Cherokee, you'll be sitting on some of it.

The seats and headrests found in the new 2011 Grand Jeep Cherokees are partly composed of new recycled foam. Starting a green-versus-greener debate, the recycled foam comprises by weight 5 percent of the seat and 10 percent of the headrest, and replaces the previously used amount of soy foam. To put it in perspective, 180,000 pounds of … Read more

Diesel option for Grand Cherokee? Not yet

SAN FRANCISCO -- Jeep has no immediate plans to sell a diesel version of its redesigned 2011 Grand Cherokee in North America.

Jeep will begin exporting the diesel-powered Grand Cherokee to Europe early next year. But for North American consumers, it is "an open question because the business case has to make sense," Phil Jansen, the Grand Cherokee's chief engineer, said during a press event here.

At issue is how many U.S. buyers will accept the price for the engine and the system for the urea aftertreatment. The urea system is required to meet emissions standards … Read more

Chrysler: America's Bimmer, Benz?

DETROIT -- If Chrysler LLC can survive its financial crisis, it will emerge as a boutique enterprise along the lines of Germany's premium carmakers, co-President Jim Press said in an interview last week.

He suggested that Chrysler could show the way to a sustainable model for a smaller U.S. auto industry.

"If there's one company in America that can build high-craftsmanship, innovative vehicles, it's Chrysler," Press said.

Chrysler will build vehicles that have premium features but are affordable to consumers. Press said the 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup signals the company's direction.

Mexican drug cartel's Bond mobile

It looks like the bad guys are taking a leaf out of the Q Branch car-modification manual. According to the BBC, Mexican police have discovered a gadget-laden Jeep Grand Cherokee equipped with an onboard smoke machine and a device to scatter spikes in the road behind it in order to evade capture. The vehicle, which is believed to belong to members of a drug cartel, was abandoned in the northern Mexican state of Tamaulipas after a shoot-out. The SUV may not be on a par with the torpedo-launching, oil-spraying, mine-ejecting Lotus Esprit that Commander Bond used to his advantage in &… Read more
