What would 10,000 iPhones as dominoes look like?

We're not entirely sure what we'd do with 10,000 iPhones. Even if you just used a different one every day, you'd still have enough iPhones for more than 27 years.

That said, this video by CG animation studio Aatma doesn't, in fact, feature real iPhone 5s. The phones are actually very clever CG, which is unsurprising, coming from Aatma. The studio has created a plethora of extraordinarily realistic iPhone "concept" videos.

This particular video was created as a "mock-up" of what an advertisement showcasing the iPhone's NFC feature (which it … Read more

Gotham's villains reimagined as 1920s mugshots

You may have seen this great collection of mugshots from 1920s Australia floating around the Internet. A couple of years ago, they were exhibited at the Sydney Justice & Police Museum, and they caused quite a stir thanks to the rather stylish look of the arrestees.

They caught the attention of Canadian CG artist Jason Mark, aka Jempix. Although Gotham is generally a little more '40s noir than 1920s Prohibition, Mark has done a fantastic job of blending the villains of Gotham with the slyly amused and sullen villains of those photographs. … Read more

Reviewed: A bulky Eizo and a brittle ViewSonic

Late last week I reviewed two very different monitors.

One, the 22-inch Eizo ColorEdge CG222w was the first professional grade monitor I've reviewed. And by professional, I mean, at $1,300, it easily prices itself out of most people's pocketbooks and should only be bought by pro artists that know exactly what they want.

The second was the 24-inch ViewSonic vg2427wm.

The Eizo uses an S-PVA panel that gives it wide viewing angles. It's also one heavy and bulky son of a gun at 24 pounds and definitely feels like $1,300 worth of hardware is encased … Read more

Visual effects shoot for realism in explosive 'Terminator Salvation'

Spoiler alert: This article describes some of the action sequences in the new Terminator movie. If you don't want to know details about some scenes, bookmark this article and come back to read it after you've seen the movie.

SAN FRANCISCO--What do you do if you're a filmmaker trying to capture a scene in which an onrushing tow truck slams into a parked car, sending the car rolling neatly up and over the truck's back, but you face the reality that the car, vaulted into the air by a cannon shot from below, actually flies high … Read more

Eizo's pro monitor complicates things

I'll be completely honest: LCD computer monitors intended for graphics professionals are not my area of expertise. Most of the monitors I've reviewed have been consumer-focused.

Monitors like the Dell SP2309W and Samsung P2370, while great for gaming or just looking nice in your apartment (respectively), would not be caught dead on the desk of a graphics professional. (Of course, if I'd found a monitor could actually die at all, well, I probably would not be writing this, as the prospects of an inanimate object possessing a soul would be far too exciting to continue sitting at … Read more
