China questions review of controversial carbon program

Reuters

A Chinese government fund has told a U.N. panel it supports project developers that earn carbon offsets under a lucrative Kyoto Protocol program, and rejects the idea that they are overcompensated.

Chinese project developers rejected key grounds for a review of Kyoto's clean development mechanism (CDM), and the China CDM Fund supported them, confidential papers showed a week before a U.N. panel decides whether to launch a formal review of the program.

The projects are the most lucrative under the CDM, which allows rich countries to buy offsets from carbon-cutting projects in the developing world as a … Read more

U.S. Cellular announces basic PCD 8635

PCD is no stranger to the basic clam shell, and it has just come out with yet another model for U.S. Cellular.

Dubbed the CDM8635, this entry-level phone has a 1.5-inch mono external display, a 2.2-inch color internal display, a 1.3-megapixel camera, voice-activated dialing, text and multimedia messaging, dedicated keys for a speakerphone and zoom, and not much else. We're not sure of pricing just yet, but we do know it' will be available starting June 1 (that's Tuesday) on U.S. Cellular.

Verizon Wireless CDM8975 does Push-to-Talk

The Verizon Wireless CDM8975 is one of a few Verizon Wireless phones that has push-to-talk capabilities, and we managed to test it out recently. It has quite a lackluster design, but we do like its roomy keypad, colorful screen, and external music player controls. We also like that it has EV-DO Rev. A, which makes downloading music and loading Web pages quite speedy. Other features include a 1.3-megapixel camera, a music player, A-GPS, stereo Bluetooth, and access to Verizon's V Cast broadband services. Check out our full review of the Verizon Wireless CDM8975 for more details.

Verizon Wireless announces the slim CDM-8975

Most push-to-talk phones are of the rugged variety, but there are also those that are slimmer and more compact. Verizon Wireless and PCD have released the CDM8975, which is exactly that.

This push-to-talk device also features a 1.3-megapixel camera, a speakerphone, a microSD card slot, Bluetooth, and more. It's only $99 after a two-year contract and a $50 rebate. Strangely, apparently the rebate will only come in the form of a debit card. Not sure why Verizon decided to do that, but there it is. The CDM8975 will be available March 9.

U.S. voluntary carbon market does not reward complexity

I had a lively discussion with Susan Wood, CEO of SCC Americas, at the Carbon Finance North America Conference last week. SCC Americas is the U.S. arm of Syndicatum Carbon Capital, one of the largest developers of Kyoto-based CDM carbon credit projects in the world. Susan herself has been doing emissions trading for more than a decade, after starting out as an environmental engineer.

The punchline in our chat was quite fascinating--the U.S. voluntary carbon market does not reward complexity in projects, Susan says. Basically, U.S. carbon credit developers are only doing a few limited types of … Read more

EcoSecurities founder says carbon markets work

As arguably the largest single market segment in the clean-tech sector, carbon markets are an area of keen interest for me personally and professionally, so it is always frustrating that the mainstream media largely refuses to learn the details.

In general, layman and media who don't understand the details of the carbon markets attack carbon offsets in two areas: first, questioning whether the credits are for a project that would have occurred anyway (a concept known in carbon as "additionality"); and second, questioning whether there are checks and balances to ensure the environmental standards are adhered to … Read more

UTStarcom sneaks in the CDM7126

UTStarcom didn't have much of a presence at this year's CTIA, but it did sneak in an announcement of the AWS-enabled CDM-7126 handset for both Cricket and MetroPCS. The Cricket version is dubbed the CDM-7126C and the MetroPCS version is dubbed the CDM-7126M. They're both about the same, save for the look of the front surface. As for the phone itself, it's a pretty standard device, made for the entry-level market though it does have Bluetooth as well. The front surface is pretty unique in that there are LED indicators for incoming calls and text messages, … Read more

UTStarcom CDM-7075 launches on Verizon

Nearly a year later, the UTStarcom CDM-7075 has finally launched, thanks to its partnership with Verizon Wireless (it is now rebranded as the Verizon Wireless CDM 7075). Sporting a navy-and-white coat instead of the black one we saw at last year's CTIA, the CDM-7075 is meant to be an entry-level camera phone. It has a 1.8-inch, 65,000-color internal display, a 1-inch monochrome external screen, a speakerphone, voice dialing, e-mail, text and picture messaging, a mobile Web browser, and not much else. That's okay though; the CDM-7075 is available for the unbeatable price of free after an … Read more

A couple of new UTStarcom phones

UTStarcom has a larger-than-life presence here at CES, and the company has a couple of new phones out to go along with it. The UTStarcom CDM8960 and the UTStarcom CDM8935 both made their debut earlier today. Though they're both CDMA clamshell cameraphones, they do have a few notable differences. The CDM8960 measures a thin 3.7 inches by 1.9 inches by 0.8 inch and weighs in at about 3.2 ounces. It is the more multimedia-friendly phone because of its features: a 1.3-megapixel camera, a 262,000-color screen, a microSD card slot, and EV-DO support.
