10 tuners' quest for speed

An automaker may think it has engineered a car to perfection, but there is always someone, somewhere, who can improve it. A cottage industry of tuner companies has arisen around automakers, retuning engines and suspensions, swapping out parts, all in a quest to make these cars perform better.

The practice has become so popular and effective that some automakers either buy an independent tuner or build up an internal division to build performance variants of their standard-model lineups. Names such as AMG, STI, SRT, Callaway, and Shelby become synonymous with speed and squealing tires.

Callaway C16 Speedster, an American supercar

At a small booth in one of the hallways of the 2007 Los Angeles Auto Show, Callaway displayed its new C16 Speedster. The Speedster, which was introduced last summer, completes Callaway's C16 lineup. Previous models are a Cabrio and a Coupe, but neither look as unique as the Speedster. The C16s rely on a Corvette chassis, but in the case of the Speedster, the body is original. Given Callaway Cars' close proximity to New York City in Old Lyme, Conn., this week's auto show was the logical locale for a debut.

Arguably the best work from Callaway Cars designer Paul Deutschman, the C16 cabriolet was introduced to the public at the 2007 New York International Auto Show on Thursday. Company founder Reeves Callaway introduced the car.
