SkyDrive, Google Maps and other iOS app faves of 2012

2012 was another year that kept me glued to my iPhone and iPad, checking out the latest batch of iOS games and other apps. So which ones proved to be among my favorites? In alphabetical order...

Angry Birds Star Wars My wife and I love to play Angry Birds, and the Star Wars edition is a great take on the familiar franchise. This app could've easily taken a turn to the dark side. But Rovio knew just how to pair its birds and piggies with the classic Star Wars characters and settings that fans know and love. The challenging … Read more

Apple Byte: The iPad Mini Retina rumors start early

Apple crushes its previous first weekend for iPad sales, proving that people will still buy the latest shiny Apple toy. Having two different iPad models probably helped as well. One thing we do know is that stores didn't sell out. If you're holding out for that Retina Display, and you believe the rumor mills, they're already working on it for you.

The future of the iMac is going to look a lot different after reports that Apple is looking to eventually stop using Intel processors in favor of its own mobile processors. Those next-gen iMacs are going … Read more

Digital storage basics, Part 1: Internal storage vs. memory

Editors' note: This post is part of an ongoing series. For the other parts, check out the related stories.

It's not the locker room type of storage we're talking about here. Instead it's something much more important and often underrated: the place where information is stored.

When it comes to computer storage, judging from many questions friends and readers send me, there's quite a bit of confusion among general users as to what it actually is. And it's not your fault; digital storage can be as messy as my desk. This is the reason for … Read more

We'll cover everything you can expect to see at Apple's next event. iPad Mini? Check. MacBook Pro 13-inch with Retina Display? Most likely. New iMacs and Mac Minis? Highly likely. Even CNET Senior Editor Rich Brown, who covers PC desktops, will be attending the event, and he usually only goes when Apple announces desktops.

There are still lines for the iPhone 5, and there are plenty of reasons why. Plus, we have an awesome iPad giveaway from our … Read more

Apple Byte: The iPad Mini is in mass production

In this week's episode, you can't escape all the news and rumors about Apple's anticipated iPad Mini. My own sources have confirmed the reports that it's in mass production. Plus, we're also seeing just as many product leaks with the iPad Mini that we saw from the iPhone 5.

Tim Cook said Apple was "doubling down on secrecy," but I haven't seen it yet. What do YOU think Apple has been doubling down on? Let us know in the poll.

Speaking of the iPhone 5, crying about Maps is getting old. Purplegate … Read more

Malwarebytes remains simple, effective

The bottom line: A lack of recent substantive updates haven't prevented Malwarebytes Anti-Malware from staying on top of the on-demand malware-killing mountain.

Review: Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is a surprisingly effective anti-malware tool given that it hasn't received any major updates in the past few years. Sure, the scans are a bit faster and the installation is definitely smoother, but overall the product remains unaltered.

Installation Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, or MBAM as it's often abbreviated, has a rapid installation process that simultaneously loads the program onto your computer and updates its detection engine when you run the installer. The whole … Read more

Why my new iPad's storage doesn't add up

I'm no math genius, but I know when I'm being shorted.

For example, when I unwrapped my new iPad and checked the settings, it showed a total storage capacity of 28GB -- not the 32GB I paid for.

Indeed, it says 32GB right on the box. So what happened to that extra 4GB of space? Was my iPad defective? Was Apple trying to pull something?

It's not a defect or a scam. Instead, this storage shortfall is the result of a calculation oddity that dates back to the early days of hard drives.

In other words, it'… Read more

Bare-bones PDF converter

PDFs can be useful but they can also be a pain; at one time or another, most of us have encountered a PDF that we wished were in an editable format. ByteScout PDF Viewer is a basic program that lets you not only view PDFs but also export them in editable formats. It's nothing fancy, but it does work.

The program's interface is plain, with a few buttons across the top for its features. You can open and view PDFs, print them, and export them as HTML, text, or Word files. That's the extent of what ByteScout … Read more

Digital City 134: Streaming video services snub NYC; doing the new Netflix math

This week, we poll everyone on their favorite online music service, and find out why New Yorkers can't get the latest and greatest in streaming TV services. Plus, we've got some Spotify invite codes to give away!

Bonus: Download the show's jaunty theme song as a free MP3 here.

Horticultural headache

We take a pretty laid-back approach to gardening; when spring rolls around we put some plants in the ground, may or may not remember to water them, and then let nature take its course. My Garden Bytes is not a program that is meant for the likes of us. This complex database lets serious gardeners track every aspect of their horticultural endeavors, including plant growth, water, fertilizer, soil, light, and humidity. Unfortunately, we found using the program too frustrating to recommend it very highly, even for those who wish to keep such detailed records.

The program's interface is somewhat … Read more
