Best Buy recalls MacBook Pro batteries due to 'burn hazards'

After a U.S. government agency received 13 reports of battery fires, including one that caused a "serious burn" to the user's leg, Best Buy has decided to recall thousands of replacement batteries for Apple's MacBook Pro laptops.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced Wednesday that "consumers should stop using this product" because "the battery can catch fire while charging." The culprit product is ATG lithium-ion batteries and Best Buy is recalling about 5,100 of them.

Best Buy to open hundreds of Windows stores within its stores

Microsoft has cut a deal to open Windows stores within 500 Best Buy locations in the United States and 100 more Best Buy and Future Shop locations in Canada.

The store-within-a-store sites, which will be 1,500 square feet to 2,200 square feet, will offer a wide selection of Windows tablets and PCs, Windows Phones, Microsoft Office, and Xbox consoles. There will also be space set aside specifically for Microsoft's Surface tablet computers.

Nintendo, Best Buy partner to bring E3 games to stores

Nintendo is doing something quite different to build up excitement for its E3 game lineup.

The company announced today that it has signed a deal with Best Buy to make a select list of its E3 games playable at 110 Best Buy locations across North America. Nintendo didn't say which games will be playable, but there will be a short time frame in which the titles will be available: between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. local time on Wednesday, June 12, and between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. local time on Saturday, June 15. Starting May 26, buyers can save $50 off the price of an iPhone 5, 4S, or 4 with the usual two-year contract through Verizon Wireless, AT&T, or Sprint.

Best Buy bails out of European venture in $775M deal

Best Buy is selling its 50 percent joint venture stake back to mobile phone retailer Carphone Warehouse for 500 million pounds ($775 million).

It's a massive loss for Best Buy, which bought 50 percent of Carphone Warehouse's retail operations for $2.1 billion in 2008, during the time where the global financial crisis was about to kick the European market firmly where it hurts.

Leap Motion to delay ship date until July 22

Leap Motion said today that it will delay shipping its Leap 3D motion controller to preorder customers until July 22. The startup had said previously that it planned on shipping next month. Retail partners will make the product available to other customers "shortly after" that date.

In a conference call, CEO Michael Buckwald said that although he felt that the company could have gotten Leaps into people's hands by the original schedule, that time frame wouldn't have allowed time for adequate testing.
