Alleged robbers butt-dial 911

We like to give advice to the less perfect here, principally because the perfect tend not to feel they need advice.

When it comes to those who rob, pilfer, or otherwise break the law, we tend to suggest that they don't taunt the police. Another suggestion is to turn off your phone.

This latter suggestion might have been useful for two men who stand accused of taking things that weren't theirs from a car.

Police in Fresno, Calif., say that a 911 operator received a call. No one was on the other end.

However, the dispatcher decided to keep listening and then, as KJRH-TV reports, voices were heard.… Read more

Butt-dial to 911 spoils alleged drug deal

None of us is immune from being our own worst enemy.

We find ways to sabotage ourselves that aren't even assuaged by years of visits to our psychologists.

The extremely openhearted may, therefore, find a certain at-oneness with an alleged drug dealer whose bottom may have caused him to be arrested.

As KGW-TV deals it, Raleigh Reynolds, 25, was allegedly about to participate in a narcotic business transaction.

Unfortunately (at least for him), police say a 911 dispatcher got to listen in on the proceedings, as Reynolods inadvertently called it in.… Read more

Man butt dials 911 during alleged drug deal

Sometimes life does not want to bring you luck.

And sometimes it delivers a perverse sort of justice, one that makes you question just who or what is in control of this world.

Such sentiments might have entered the thought systems of Justin Kryzanowski, a 24-year-old man from Pennsylvania, who is said to have patched in an accidental guest to an alleged drug deal.

With perhaps the wrong twitch of a cheek or the inadvertent pressure of a jean seam, his cell phone allegedly and independently dialed 911, and police say they listened in to the whole thing.

According the the Scranton Times-Tribune, … Read more

The 404 1,051: Where we were big in the '90s (podcast)

Today we'll take a critical look at the way people respond to celebrity deaths in the wake of Maurice Sendak, Adam Yauch, and Vidal Sassoon. We'll take you through the five typical stages of "grief" based on what Vice Magazine calls the Facebook Death Patrol.

We also have some bad news to report to children of millennials: your parents are still getting it on, and they're probably using a smartphone at the same time. A survey from Meredith's Parent Network questioned 1,000 moms born between 1977 and 1994 and found that 21 percent of them used their smartphones in the bathroom, while an astounding 12 percent admitted to using them in coitus! Sorry if we just ruined your day, kids.… Read more

Teach your kids to draw Everything Butt Art

Ever tried teaching your child how to draw an animal, but just didn't know where to start? Next time, try starting with a butt. That's right.

Everything Butt Art, a freemium iPad app, wants to teach your child how to draw, a learning process that relies on repetition and familiarity. One where every drawing starts with a butt. It may sound kind of strange, or perhaps even offensive at first, but once you begin using the app and go through the steps of each drawing, your apprehension quickly turns into admiration.

Let's take a look at how … Read more

The 404 934: Where portable gaming is undead (podcast)

Nothing lasts forever in the tech industry, and Nintendo's upcoming Wii U, the Sony PlayStation Vita, and all other one-trick portable gaming consoles are next in line to get the axe! At least that's what Jeff hypothesizes, although the trolls in his CNET editorial have opposing opinions.

After we sort through all the hate mail, we turn to a story about Internet domain squatters taking advantage of the #OccupyWallStreet trend to make money off the protesters.

And in the same way that Bacolicio.us set the veganism movement back several years, a new site called OccupyTheURL is turning the 99 percent into an online gimmick. Type in any Web site--the 404 homepage works--and your page will soon be flooded with graphic pop-ups of protesters blocking your access. We'd rather have bacon.… Read more

Stop pocket-dialing on your iPhone

After reading Nicole Cozma's post about how to stop pocket-dialing from an Android phone, I wondered if the same tips would apply to iPhone users. First, I checked the App Store for something akin to Call Confirm, the Android app that presents an extra step before you place a call. No luck. The closest I found was Call Guard, a $0.99 app that does the opposite--preventing you from hanging up on someone during a call. In the end, iPhone users have two tactics they can employ to lessen the chance that their pocket, purse, or butt dials on its own.… Read more

When you accidentally call someone from your phone, they may hear background noise in your house, or a conversation they shouldn't be privy to. Even worse, it could be an international number that is extremely expensive to call! Here are three tips to help you prevent pocket-dialing from your Android phone.

1. Install an app that confirms calls before you make them. It is unlikely that you will select someone to call and manage to hit the Call button in the confirmation window. There are many choices for this style of app, in this example Call Confirm … Read more

Larceny suspect butt-dials 911

Fortune doesn't always favor the butt-dialer. In fact, has any butt-dial ever enjoyed a good result?

I ask because I bring you news of someone who might be another victim of butt-awful fate.

According to the Associated Press, three men with seemingly ill-intentions were discussing stealing things from people's houses in upstate New York.

It so happened that one of them enjoyed perhaps an imperfect lock on his cell phone. Or perhaps, he had his body positioned in such a way that the cell phone was activated.

In any case, it seems that this activation led to a magical key or two being depressed--to 911.

Kevin Walsh, sheriff of Onondaga County, told the AP that the alleged miscreants were driving not far from a place they had robbed some time previously. … Read more

Accidental butt-dial brings SWAT team to school

I want you to consider very carefully where you keep your cell phone.

It seems, you see, that an Illinois man whose choice it was to keep his cell phone in his back pocket, made himself to appear something of a butthead, when a SWAT team came to call.

The Chicago Tribune has no end of delight in offering that this gentleman, who surprisingly remains anonymous, made an accidental call to his wife.

Or rather his bottom did, as it rolled over the phone in his back pocket and depressed the key for the last number dialed.

This, so popularly … Read more
