Banking via mobile device jumps 54 percent

The number of people accessing their bank or brokerage accounts through mobile devices surged 54 percent in the fourth quarter last year compared with the same period in 2009, according to a new report from ComScore.

During the fourth quarter of 2010, 29.8 million Americans tapped into their bank, credit, or brokerage accounts via cell phones and other mobile devices, according to the Mobile Financial Advisor report released yesterday.

E*Trade, TD Ameritrade to do M&A tango?

Online brokerages E*Trade Financial and TD Ameritrade Holding reportedly are hitting the dance floor to test out the concept of a merger, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal.

The Journal notes that the parties have been in tight discussions over the past weeks but that they haven't yet progressed to that final M&A dip.

Nonetheless, E*Trade shares were up 6 percent and TD Ameritrade rose 8 percent in pre-market trading, according to MarketWatch.

Markets take a hit, and so does Schwab

It's been a rough and tumble morning for the markets. The Dow Jones plummeted 300 points, or 2.4 percent, to 12,553.06, according to the Associated Press. And the S&P fell 2.31 percent to 1,374, while the Nasdaq dropped 2.7 percent to 2,392.56.
