Ouya console ends Kickstarter campaign $8.5 million richer

Yesterday was your last chance to get in on the Kickstarter fundraising for Boxer8's Ouya. After 30 days and more than 63,000 backers, the Android-powered home gaming console pulled in a total of $8,596,475 ($99 of those from your correspondent).

As my colleague Michelle Starr reports from Australia, you can now visit the Ouya Web site to place a preorder for the console. The price is now $109, and it's due to ship in March 2013.

Regardless of your thoughts on Ouya's merits, the little console that seems like it maybe could has captured … Read more

Ouya game console adds OnLive, outs controller

If you've questioned the Ouya's core gaming chops, developer Boxer8's might have addressed some of your concerns about its Android-based, Kickstarter-funded game console this morning. The company says it has secured Ouya support from game streaming company OnLive, which will add its large cloud gaming library alongside the Ouya's own game store.

By bringing in OnLive, Ouya can boast AAA-quality titles like Warner Bros' Batman: Arkham City, THQ's upcoming DarkSiders II, and UbiSoft's Assassin's Creed games. Not every major game publisher offers its wares on OnLive -- Activision Blizzard and Electronic Arts are notable absentees, but by adding even some console-quality titles alongside the likes of Angry Birds, the Ouya console will likely gain some respectability among core gamers.… Read more

Google TV to jump across the pond to Europe

Despite being plagued with high prices, low sales, and difficulty with program distribution in the U.S., Google TV is expanding to Europe. Come September, Sony will sell Google TV-based products in Europe, according to GigaOM via a translation of a Les Echos article.

Slated to go on sale in France, Spain, Germany, and the U.K. are two devices: a set-top box costing 200 Euros ($266) and an integrated Blu-ray player for 300 euros ($399), according to GigaOM.

Google Chairman Eric Schmidt announced Google TV's rollout to Europe last August and Sony confirmed that two Google TV-compatible set-top … Read more

2011 Geneva auto show: Toyota FT-86 II concept (video)

The Toyota FT-86 II concept has been floating around for a while, but at Geneva 2011 we got a pretty clear idea how it will mesh up with a Subaru-derived power train to get Toyota back in the sports car business. Brian Cooley looks at what each company brings to the pending party.

(CNET's full coverage of the 2011 Geneva auto show)

Subaru teases its half of the Toyobaru partnership

We've been keeping a close eye on the development of the Toyota FT-86 concept, mostly because we're excited at what could be the first small, sporty Toyota (or Scion) since the Celica took a trip to the chopping block in 2006*. However, we've also been peripherally aware that Toyota's development partnership with Subaru--provider of the 86's Boxer four-cylinder engine--meant that we'd eventually see a Subaru variant of the sports coupe. It now appears that we won't have to wait much longer, as Subaru has recently launched a teaser site for its "Boxer … Read more

SeV Travel Boxers keep your phone really close

Scottevest made its mark selling specially designed clothing with more than 20 pockets in a single jacket. Its latest entry, the SeV Travel Boxers, hits a little closer to home with the the tagline "Keep it in your shorts."

This underwear comes with a pocket that's just big enough to hide an iPhone beside the family jewels. Since this is a family-friendly site, we will (painfully) dispense with the "is that a phone or are you just happy to see me" line of jokes and just say that this seems like an unlikely place to … Read more

GOP's Whitman, Fiorina lose California elections

Meg Whitman and Carly Fiorina, two ex-Silicon Valley executives who pledged to use their business acumen to fix California's many economic woes, today fell short in their bids to overcome their Democratic rivals.

Despite widespread anti-incumbent sentiment and a California unemployment rate hovering around 12 percent to 13 percent, Whitman and Fiorina failed to overcome their Democratic adversaries: onetime Gov. Jerry Brown, who sought to reclaim his old job, and incumbent Sen. Barbara Boxer, who has been in the U.S. Congress for approximately 28 years.

California polls closed at 8 p.m. PT. But it can take a … Read more

Subaru debuts next-generation boxer engines

Subaru fans rejoice. Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. (parent company of Subaru) has pulled the wraps off of its new-generation four-cylinder boxer engines. OK, it's not that exciting, but if you're already a fan of Subaru's quirky engine configuration, the promise of more power and more efficiency for new models should at least get you grinning.

The boxer engine (or flat engine), for those unfamiliar, features a four-cylinder, horizontally opposed configuration with a pair of pistons punching out toward either side of a central crankshaft--like the fists of boxers. This third generation boxer engine incorporates new improvements in … Read more

Fiorina: Politicians don't care about Silicon Valley

ASPEN, Co.--Carly Fiorina, the former chief executive at Hewlett-Packard, on Monday promised a deregulatory approach toward technology if elected to the U.S. Senate, warning of governmental overreach on Net neutrality and saying that current politicians don't understand what's important to Silicon Valley.

Fiorina, who won the Republican nomination in June, echoed what many technology executives have said for years: America's skilled-worker visa system is so badly broken that "we have to start from scratch," and that too many government policies push jobs overseas instead of making U.S. companies competitive against international rivals. … Read more

Whitman, Fiorina win California GOP primaries

Meg Whitman and Carly Fiorina, two ex-Silicon Valley executives who pledged to use their business acumen to address economic problems, handily won their respective Republican nominations for governor and U.S. Senate in California's primary election on Tuesday.

Their primary victories are likely to lead to a bruising and expensive general election campaign against their Democratic rivals: onetime Gov. Jerry Brown, who is seeking to reclaim his old job, and incumbent Sen. Barbara Boxer, who has been in the U.S. Congress for nearly 28 years.

"Californians have had enough of a government that is out of control, … Read more
