Borg cube wedding cake will assimilate your taste buds

Redditor pat_inthehat has an aunt who makes weddding cakes. That in itself is pretty cool, but his rocking aunt recently made a Borg cube wedding cake, complete with small starships and lights. Yes, lights!

The cake comes from the Sugarplum Cake Shoppe in Colorado Springs, Colo. That's a sweet name for a bakery that has embodied one of the deadliest, most unrelenting, and dark enemies from the "Star Trek" universe in cake form.… Read more

Commerce secretary to visit battery plant in China

Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke today will visit Coda's battery manufacturing facility operated by affiliate Lio Energy Systems, in Tianjin, China, to discuss U.S.-China cooperation with respect to the development and manufacturing of clean energy technology and transportation.

The visit is part of the Obama administration's first cabinet-level trade mission. Coda, a California-based battery system and electric car company, will be joined by Nexteer Automotive and BorgWarner.

"International green technology partnerships can produce rapid job growth back home and deliver energy solutions abroad, and Coda's venture proves it," Locke said. "Together, Coda … Read more

BorgWarner technology boosts new Hyundai-Kia engines

BorgWarner today announced it will supply its fourth-generation variable-turbine geometry (VTG) turbochargers for the newly developed 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel engine featured in the Hyundai ix35 and Kia Sportage.

According to a press release, BorgWarner's engineers replaced straight turbine vanes with a patented S-shaped vane design to improve thermodynamics, response and control. The new turbocharger also increases efficiency at low engine speeds.

The new technology will give a boost to the Hyundai ix35, which began production in Korea in late 2009, and the fuel-efficient diesel engine that is available in Europe this spring. The technology will also boost the … Read more

BorgWarner Turbo Technology gives CNG-Powered cars a boost

BorgWarner will supply turbochargers for the Opel 1.6-liter compressed natural gas (CNG) engine and the VW 1.4-liter TSI EcoFuel engine.

CNG engines produce about 70 percent less nitrous oxide than diesel engines and about 25 percent less carbon dioxide than gasoline engines, but are slower to accelerate than the fossil fuel counterparts.

To lower weight and guarantee a fast response on the Opel Zafira ecoFlex Turbo, BorgWarner worked with Opel to optimize the water-cooled turbocharger. The engine delivers powerful performance, accelerating from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/hr) in 11.5 seconds.

BorgWarner also worked with Volkswagen … Read more

BorgWarner will supply gearbox for electric car

DETROIT--BorgWarner will supply its eGearDrive transmission to the Coda electric sedan, scheduled for U.S. introduction in California in mid-2010.

The sedan also will have a PowerPhase 100 electric propulsion system supplied by UQM Technologies, which makes brushless, permanent-magnet electric motors.

BorgWarner, of suburban Detroit, initially plans to supply the transmissions from its factory in Longview, Texas, to an assembly plant in China, spokeswoman Erika Nielsen said. Eventually, the company may supply the transmissions from its factory in Beijing as volumes and the business case warrant, she said.

BorgWarner's production will start in July, and Coda Automotive will start … Read more

BorgWarner partners with 2010 Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan

BorgWarner will supply engine and drive-train technologies to the 2010 Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan midsize sedans.

The new mechanics will include an industry-first Cam Torque Actuated (CTA) variable cam timing (VCT) technology for the upgraded Ford Duratec 3.0-liter V-6 engine.

Unlike traditional cam phasing methods that typically use engine oil pressure to rotate the camshaft, BorgWarner's CTA technology captures the existing torsional energy in the valve train to accomplish this event, similar to a hydraulic ratchet. CTA cam phasers operate more quickly and under a wider range of engine speeds and temperatures than traditional oil-pressure-actuated cam phasers, … Read more

Myvu ships new fashion video glasses

About a year ago it seemed that everyone was coming out with their own version of video glasses. Perhaps one reason their production has since slowed down was their awkward design.

Some manufacturers have tried to address this asthetic challenge, but it remains a work in progress. Now Myvu, which was one of the earlier companies in the market, is taking its products to the runway with the fashion-conscious "Myvu Crystal" and "Myvu Shades," both of which the company has just begun to ship.

The viewers have 320 x 240 resolution and include "CyberDisplay" … Read more

Bluetooth implants: Why not?

Question: How did the Borg--the not-so-lovable cyborgs in Star Trek--get to be that way?

Answer: it all started with Bluetooth headsets.

I see more and more people walking around with Bluetooth headsets lodged behind their ears every day. Most states are passing hands-free laws for drivers. Even my technophobe wife wants one.

I could be wrong, but I think it's only a matter of time before some enterprising startup comes up with an implantable device.… Read more

Video headgear or eyepatch?

Remember how we all mocked the gadgets and appliances used by our parents when we were kids? You know, the "Veg-O-Matics," the "Pocket Fisherman" and pretty much anything else pitched by Ron Popeil on TV after 2 a.m.

Well, don't laugh--we're next. Imagine the reaction of our own children a decade from now when they find something like the "DataGlass HMD" in a corner of the basement. Accurately described by SCI FI Tech as a "cross between a pirate, a cyborg soldier and a member of the Borg hive," … Read more
