How to use bookmarklets in mobile Chrome

There are Android apps that come with many features, possibly more features than you need. Or perhaps it's not fully-featured apps you're trying to avoid, but the battery power they require. The more apps you have running in the background, the less battery life you'll see. Here's a trick you can use to skip out on apps that have Chrome bookmarklet counterparts.

This example uses Pocket (formerly Read It Later) to show you how it's done. The Pocket app is actually fantastic -- provided you want access to any queued content on-the-go. If you're … Read more

How to find the biggest cashback bonus for anything you buy

I've written many times before of my love for cashback services, which pay you back a percentage of your purchase just for going through their shopping portals.

For example, FatWallet recently started offering 3 percent back on Amazon Instant Video and MP3 purchases. And Ebates is currently paying 4 percent to 5 percent back on purchases from Dell, HP, and Lenovo.

Of course, there are lots of cashback sites out there, and some offer bigger bonuses than others. How can you make sure you're getting the maximum rebate for each store you visit?

Simple: click the Cashback Comparison bookmarklet. … Read more

Facebook, Twitter, MySpace create social search tool

Following complaints that Google's new social search tool gives skewed results instead of the most relevant ones, a group of social networks have banded together to offer an alternative.

Engineers at Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace created a proof of concept that lets people use Google to get search results from those sites as well as LinkedIn, Flickr, Quora, Tumblr, Foursquare, Crunchbase, FriendFeed, Stack Overflow, Github, and Google+. The results show the highest social media results for a given search and not just the Google+ results that Google's new Search Plus Your World does.

Microsoft is trying to give Google a run for its money by offering a translation tool that can display any Web page in your native language.

'I Need to Read This' saves URLs worth reading later

If you've ever used Read It Later, you'll probably like a new service called "I Need to Read This." It does the same thing, letting you bookmark stories that you want to read, but not right away.

Liquid Mongoose adds Picasa to its repertoire

Liquid Mongoose, the purveyors of the do-it-yourself DVD and music CD sleeves has put out a new version of its bookmarklet that supports Picasa Web albums. Now, if you're planning to burn a compilation photo CD or DVD, you'll be able to sleeve it in paper packaging that features thumbnail previews of what's on the disc.

I just gave it a spin on one of my recently uploaded albums and it worked flawlessly. Users with the existing bookmarklet won't have to upgrade since the JavaScript has stayed the same. The only confusing part is that the … Read more

TwitterKeys replaces your keyboard with a bookmarklet

I've been a long-time Windows user, and one of the many remaining traces of the old days lies deep within the accessories menu. I speak, of course, of the character map, something I rarely pull up except to find things like ? and the occasional ?. Apparently one of the hot trends on Twitter is adding some of these barely-used symbols to your Tweets, or it's at least enough of a trend for two guys over at The Next Web blog to create their own bookmarklet to avoid having to open up the character map, or learn the keyboard shortcuts … Read more
