Drain baskets as fast as you can

Arcade Hoops Basketball mimics the arcade quickshot basketball machines you might find at a pizza place or a fair, but with this app it's all about swiping your shots to the basket. Once you start the game, your job is to swipe upwards toward the basket and sink as many shots as you can in 45 seconds. The power of your shot is affected by how much you swipe so it takes a little bit of practice before you'll be hitting shots consistently.

Arcade Hoops Basketball comes with three game modes. The classic 45 second contest mentioned above, … Read more

Quick, before the boss gets back!

Paper Toss is an extremely simple but still fairly addictive game that simulates the time-honored office pastime of tossing crumpled pieces of paper into a trash can. In the game's interface, you hold your Android mobile device vertically as you flick a wad of paper toward the target can, attempting to account for a blowing fan when you calculate your trajectory. The fan changes sides and speed for each shot, and Paper Toss features three levels of difficulty, with the trash can at varying distances.

Where this game really shines, though, is in its production values: the crisp visuals, … Read more

Boom Shakalaka!

NBA Jam is an updated and faithful recreation of probably the most popular standup arcade basketball game of all time. For those who never went through several dollars in quarters at the local arcade playing this fun classic many years ago, NBA Jam is not your standard five-on-five simulation you see on consoles. This game is all about two-vs.-two high-flying dunk basketball, where just about every play is worthy of a highlight reel.

The control system for NBA Jam on offense includes a directional pad on the lower left part of the screen, and pass, shoot, and speed boost … Read more

No dunks, but still: great arcade basketball

StarDunk is a free, 2D hoop-shooting game with slick production values, great multiplayer features, and an optional system of in-app purchases that somehow isn't obnoxious.

StarDunk adds fun twists to some pretty basic gameplay: You have two minutes to score as many baskets as possible, as you touch the screen to set your ball's trajectory and then release to shoot. The ball is on the right side of the screen and the basket on the left (left-handers can swap sides), all against a spacey backdrop that matches StarDunk's electro soundtrack. The basket's backboard has four tiles … Read more

Easy batch processing

RoboBasket lets you manage and monitor a large number files at one time. Though we found some its features a bit confusing, its batch processing features worked as promised.

The program's bland user interface could be better designed for navigation, but it didn't take long to get the hang of it. When not in use, the program sits in your system tray until you click on it. Using the link provided in the Quick Start guide, we were able to browse for and select a folder containing multiple Word documents. From there, we were taken to the Rule … Read more

Getting veggies ready for the grill

I noticed something yesterday. It happened around 5 o'clock when I was looking out the window: It was still light out. There was plenty of light, in fact. It sure does sneak up on you. Before you know it, the days are going to be long and the air filled with the sweet smell of barbecue. Not long to go now. It's just around the corner. Of course that means one important thing: grilling time.

As I get older and more seasoned with the grill, I realize some things that I may have missed in my younger years. … Read more

Picnik adds support for layering, mass uploading

Picnik has just rolled out some neat new features for casual enthusiasts of photo editing.

Now found on the bottom of the editing environment is something called a "photo basket," which includes a pool of photos garnered from cloud services like Facebook, Flickr, and Photobucket, as well as uploads from users' hard drives. It also doubles as the new multiphoto uploader for those looking to unload the entirety of their memory card.

Switching between your photo sources in the basket is nearly instantaneous, and more importantly, it doesn't take you away from what you're working on. … Read more
