Intel loses key TV business engineer

Intel's fledgling TV business has lost one of its lead engineers, the company confirmed, potentially dealing a blow to its efforts to get the business off the ground.

Jim Baldwin, who served as vice president and general manager of engineering for Intel Media, has left the company to pursue other opportunities, an Intel spokesman said. Baldwin's LinkedIn profile, meanwhile, said he has retired from the company.

Baldwin couldn't immediately be reached for comment. The Intel spokesman said that the company has "a deep engineering leadership bench" and has taken steps internally to address the transition. &… Read more

Mobius bacon strip cooked up through magic of 3D printing

We may have to wait awhile for true 3D-printed meat, but in the meantime, we can take solace in a 3D-printed Mobius bacon strip. This bacon strip simultaneously evokes deep feelings of bacon-past and challenges our perception of what bacon is.

If M.C. Escher were to design breakfast products, this is the bacon he would come up with. It's a never-ending circle of pork that owes its existence to advances in 3D printing.… Read more

The 404 1,056: Where you don't win friends with salad (podcast)

The Netflix video streaming player finally gets an overhaul, but most of the upgrades to the navigation and video thumbnail layouts feel vaguely reminiscent to us, but we can't put a finger on it.

Speaking of streaming video, we'll also made a plea to HBO to broadcast episodes of "Game of Thrones" to non-subscribers. The show has quickly become the most pirated show of 2012 so far, and although we understand HBO's rights to keep the episodes in-house, we can't help but wonder why the network isn't taking advantage of this opportunity to get more money. The 404 1,013: Where just because you can doesn't mean you should (podcast)

Mark Licea resurfaces today after a half-year absence from the show, but he can't miss out on our revolt against Michael Bay for tearing apart another memory from our childhood.

Over the weekend, the director announced that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in his upcoming reboot will come from space instead of a green canister of toxic ooze.… Read more

Will Will Arnett eat Alec Baldwin in Hulu Super Bowl spot?

You might remember that, three years ago, Alec Baldwin rather graced the Super Bowl in an ad for Hulu.

In those heady times before he became subsumed into the alien world of Words With Friends, Baldwin offered that everyone in TV was, in fact, an alien. (I have embedded the evidence below.)

For this year's Super Bowl, it seems that concept is making a comeback, except this time with Will Arnett. Here we see him in front of the same large white doors that separate us from TV world.

Finally, he enters. But what is this all about? Should … Read more

The 404 961: Where we've got a Twitch in our eye (podcast)

There's plenty of live video broadcasting platforms to choose on the Web these days, but today we're chatting with one of the pioneers.

Justin Kan is one of the co-founders of Justin.TV, and he drops by our studio today for a full episode about the origins of life streaming and how the site paved the road to Justin's new project for live video gaming, TwitchTV.

We'll also talk to Justin about his participation in Y Combinator, a start-up incubator that helps green entrepreneurs through the first three months of genesis.

The boot camp gives founders the seed funding they need for general living expenses, allowing them to focus on the business idea. YC also guides them through the media pitching process and how to grab the attention of venture capitalists and seed investors.

Some of the headline-grabbing companies to grow from Y Combinator include Scribd, Loopt, Grubwithus, and Justin.TV itself.

Tune in to hear about how TwitchTV is bringing competitive gaming to a much larger audience, not to mention a few tips on what it takes to earn a spot in the next Y Combinator batch!… Read more

Alec Baldwin's love for iPhone game won't fly

I was on an American Airlines flight the other day, when the self-righteous man next to me was refusing to turn off his iPhone.

"NOW!" bellowed the flight crew lady, as if she were talking to a recalcitrant child or a loser lover.

I wonder if something similar might have happened to actor Alec Baldwin yesterday, when he was removed from an American Airlines flight after being somewhat slow to turn off his iPhone, on which he was playing Zynga's Words With Friends.

The way ABC News reports it, Baldwin might have gotten a little annoyed. Or … Read more

Fox kills Alec Baldwin's Emmys phone-hacking joke

I had hoped that, after Ricky Gervais said whatever he felt like at the 2010 Golden Globes, award show hosts could joke about anything.

It appears not.

After a revelation by Deadline, "30 Rock" actor Alec Baldwin tweeted today that Fox (aka News Corp) had, indeed, removed a little joke that he had created with the writers specially for the occasion.

No, it wasn't a joke about Tom Cruise's height, James Franco's presentational skills, or Brad Pitt's exciting personal life.

It was a joke about the News of the World phone-hacking scandal. You might … Read more

Mel Gibson and Web's latest celeb meltdown

Alec Baldwin, David O'Russell, Christian Bale are among the celebrities who have seen their reputations tarnished after recordings of them in fits of anger spread across the Web.

To that list, we can now add actor-director Mel Gibson.

RadarOnline.com has posted to its Web site what it says is a recording of Gibson, star of such films as "Braveheart," "Lethal Weapon," and "Signs," screaming and cursing at former girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva during a recent phone conversation. Not surprisingly, the eight-minute clip has gone viral.

RadarOnline offers little in the way of details … Read more
