More 8-inch Android tablets on the way, says analyst

Android tablets have largely been a 7- or 10-inch affair to date, but 8 inches could be the new sweet spot, according to NPD DisplaySearch.

Dell and Lenovo are among the tablet makers preparing 8-inch Android tablets, according to a blog post Tuesday from NPD DisplaySearch.

Supply chain indications point to production of Android-based tablet PCs with 8-inch, 1,280x800 displays in Q3'13 [third-quarter 2013]. Asus Fonepad Note FHD 6 is a promising phablet but lacks 4G

Phablets are here to stay! Just kidding -- it's too soon to tell if the hybrid phone-tablet trend will become a standard, but the category will soon add the Asus Fonepad Note FHD 6 to its growing landscape.

The Android 4.2 phablet is similar to the Asus Fonepad, which has recently become commercially available in Asia, but features a smaller 6-inch Super IPS+ LCD screen with a higher 1,920x1,080-pixel resolution. Unlike its predecessor, the Fonepad Note FHD 6 is designed with a stylus, which makes use of baked-in software provided by Asus.

Dire warnings for PCs, Windows 8 -- this time from Citi

Citi Research is revising its forecast for negative PC growth as it paints a dark picture of the incredible shrinking PC market.

Citi is cutting 2013 PC year-to-year growth to negative 10 percent from negative 4 percent growth, according to a note to investors late Friday.

"The Citi global technology team is revising down its 2013 PC growth estimate to -10% y/y (from -4%) based on further sub-seasonal demand" in the first quarter and slowing notebook production.

In a section titled "Y/Y Growth in 2H? Don't Think So," Citi says that despite investor … Read more

Asus Transformer Pad Infinity crushes it on specs

Asus is aiming high with its release of the new Transformer Pad Infinity. The high-end tablet will house the much-anticipated Nvidia Tegra 4 processor and boast an impressively high-resolution screen that will likely cause Android aficionados to uncontrollably froth at the mouth in anticipation -- and maybe catch the wandering eye of a few Apple iPad loyalists.

The 10-inch tablet dons a 2,560x1,600-pixel resolution and houses Nvidia's latest 1.9GHz Tegra 4 processor with a 72-core GeForce GPU. Other specs include 4K output via HDMI, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage, Bluetooth 3.0, and a … Read more

Asus takes on the HTPC market

TAIPEI -- In addition to new laptops and tablets, Asus also showcased its latest home theater PC (HTPC) offerings, the VivoPC and VivoMouse, at Computex.

The VivoPC appears somewhat larger than the Mac mini, but it has a high-quality metal chassis and is designed to blend easily among A/V devices. Other key differentiators include a pair of front speakers and 3.5-inch hard disk drive (HDD) support. This is unlike most small form factor PCs, which can accept only 2.5-inch HDDs.

Asus Zenbook Infinity sports Gorilla Glass 3 exterior

TAIPEI -- The Asus Zenbook Infinity, the company's latest design-focused ultrabook, is encased in Corning's Gorilla Glass 3.

Asus is not the first company to cover a notebook in Gorilla Glass. Its keen competitor, Acer, has also done so with the Aspire S7, though that's Gorilla Glass 2. The latest version of Corning's material is supposed to be lighter, tougher and resistant to scratches and scuffs.

With a maximum thickness of just 15.5mm, the Zenbook Infinity is extremely slim.

Other technical details of the product are scant, though based on what can be seen, it … Read more

Asus Memo Pad HD 7 tablet gets much-needed upgrades over predecessor

Well, that didn't take long. Less than two months after I posted this review of the Memo ME172V, Asus has revealed its younger, more powerful sibling: the Memo Pad HD 7 -- formally known internally as the sequentially appropriate ME173.

The newer 7-inch tablet will ship with Android 4.2, and will feature a 1.2GHz quad-core MediaTek MT8125 CPU and a PowerVR SGX 544 graphics processor. While I'm not familiar with that particular version of MediaTek silicon, the SGX 544 is nothing to sneeze at when its comes to graphics processing; however, whether the tablet's graphics … Read more

Seagate demos its 5mm Laptop Ultrathin HDD in Android tablet

TAIPEI--At Computex 2013, Seagate announced its latest 5mm hard drive for laptops and tablets, the Laptop Ultrathin HDD. The 2.5-inch drive was first talked about last year, and will now start shipping to Seagate's OEM partners.

The Laptop Ultrathin HDD will come in 320GB and 500GB capacities and is wrapped in a steel, rather than aluminum, case for toughness. Standard laptop hard drives are typically 7mm or 9.5mm in thickness.
