Bible Heroes Noah and the Ark offers child-friendly fun

The Bible goes mobile with Bible Heroes Noah and the Ark. This colorful app does the storytelling for you: a voice reads aloud a child-friendly version of Noah and the Ark. It includes a few other fun features, but you'll have to pay for better selection.

Bible Heroes Noah and the Ark opens with a colorful homepage featuring Noah front and center. There, you have three options: Read, Color, and Sing. A Menu button takes you to other apps in iTunes from the same publisher that feature Bible-centered characters. We first selected Read, and a woman's voice read … Read more

Meet Ark, the social friend-finder that should stay independent

Nobody should own Ark. TechCrunch reported today that the well-seeded people search startup rebuffed a probe from Facebook to acquire the company. Thank goodness.

Ark is yet another stab at an old unsolved need: A site that searches all the social networks to find the people you're looking for. This is most notably not something that Google can do, as Google cannot search within the structured and closed databases of Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and so on. (It should have better luck with Google+, assuming you're logged in.)

Previously I have covered companies like Spock (now iSearch), which aimed to do a similar thing. … Read more

Companies fear cybercrime more than insider threats

External attacks from cybercriminals will soon pose a greater risk to the corporate world than insider threats, according to the results of a Cyber-Ark survey (PDF) released yesterday.

Polling more than 1,400 IT staffers and top-level executives around the world, Cyber-Ark Software's fifth annual "Trust, Security and Passwords" report tried to get a sense of the security dangers that concern the corporate world for now and in the near future. The survey found that 57 percent of the executives believe that over the next one to three years, cybercriminals will present more of a security risk … Read more

ILM doc shows Lucas' focus on making 'great movies'

SAN FRANCISCO--When George Lucas talks about the raison d'etre of his award-winning visual effects studio, Industrial Light & Magic, his logic might strike some in the bottom line-obsessed world of Hollywood as heretical.

"I started ILM to help make great movies," Lucas told CNET recently. "That's what we're here for. We're not here as a big moneymaking organization. We're not here as a business. We're here to make great movies."

Of course, any filmmaker would probably want to say something like that, but Lucas may well be the one person … Read more

Survey: Businesses snooped on by ex-employees, IT staff

Many IT folks think snooping is on the rise at their companies. They may know best since they're the ones doing some of the snooping, at least according to survey results released Wednesday by Cyber-Ark.

To put together its fourth annual "Trust, Security and Passwords" (PDF) survey, security vendor Cyber-Ark said it questioned more than 400 IT professionals across the U.S. and the U.K., mostly from enterprise-size businesses.

Among those surveyed, 67 percent admitted that they accessed confidential information not relevant to their jobs. In nominating the department most likely to snoop, 54 percent pointed … Read more

Here comes the Air accessory deluge

Less than three days since the MacBook Air's debut, companies are working furiously to come out with accessories that will most certainly deluge the market in coming months. So even though Belkin's sleeves and cases aren't exactly revolutionary, they score points for being so quick out of the floodgate. In fact, Belkin's already got a whole new line on its site, with options for color, leather, neoprene, straps, and fasteners, for $40 or $50. It's unclear when they'll be ready for delivery, however. So if you want some faster--and cheaper--you can always opt for &… Read more

'Raiders' theater is buried treasure

Its media gear may not be state of the art, but we're just happy to see a home theater that, for once, doesn't have a Star Wars or Star Trek theme. The designers of this Raiders of the Lost Ark theater were commissioned to spend more time on ambience than technical specs, if that's not obvious from the photos. That means special attention was paid to such props as torches, hieroglyphics and Indiana's trademark hat, jacket and whip, as well as the original idol from the movie's opening, according to Electronic House.

The room, which … Read more
