Tivoli's 'wireless' PAL radio

The Tivoli Audio PAL (Portable Audio Laboratory) radio is pretty small, just 6.25 by 3.7 by 3.9 inches, and it weighs a little under 2 pounds. It has just one 2.5-inch "full-range" speaker, but the little radio is one of my all-time favorite products. The battery-powered PAL is "wireless," because radio was, after all, the original widespread wireless format.

The PAL is dead simple to use: turn it on, select AM or FM radio, and tune to the station you love. You can also plug an iPod, or any device, into the … Read more

CES: Audiovox puts Android in your car's headrests

LAS VEGAS--Audiovox knows that rear-seat DVD player sales are slumping, and its previous endeavors with the FLO TV digital video service ended in failure, so the electronics manufacturer is looking to reinvent headrest-based mobile entertainment in a very interesting way. It's debuting a prototype Android-powered rear-seat entertainment system.

The system combines a rear-seat DVD player and an Android tablet into one mobile hub. Users can connect the system to the Internet to stream YouTube videos, update their Facebook pages, and access other online content from the backseat. The prototype features a full Android 2.1 Eclair experience--there's even … Read more

Zoho's winning strategy: open source + cloud

These days, it's virtually impossible to avoid open-source software. If you're a Web company, don't even bother trying.

That's the message I got from a conversation Friday with Raju Vegesna, evangelist at Zoho, a leading competitor to Google Docs. According to Vegesna, the company--formerly known as AdventNet, now called Zoho Corp.--has been around for 13 years, and has always used free, but not necessarily open-source, software as part of its strategy. The company has released software under open-source licenses before, including the somewhat controversial vTiger project.

With 1.8 million users of Zoho.com, growing … Read more

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete coming to Blu-ray

In 2005, we got to witness the return of two extremely popular characters in the Final Fantasy franchise--Cloud Strife and Sephiroth--but this time they'd do battle in a movie and not in a game. As of 2006 that movie, Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, has sold more than 10.5 million copies worldwide on DVD and UMD. And now it's getting the full Blu-ray treatment.

On June 2, Sony pictures is releasing Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete (director's cut) on Blu-ray. Exclusive to the release will be 26 minutes of additional footage and over 1000 revised scenes, each of which was re-recorded with the original voice cast including Rachel Leigh Cook (Josie and the Pussycats) and Mena Suvari (American Beauty), and a 25-minute original anime short film, telling the story of the character Denzel before the events of Advent Children; a featurette showing a story line digest incorporating related footage from the video games; a documentary on the history of Final Fantasy VII; and a first look at the Final Fantasy XIII video game.

We received an early preview of this upcoming release and it looked beautiful. It was so detailed you could count hair strands and see textures in the clothing.… Read more

First Look: Advent VM9423

This new multimedia system from Advent (Audiovox/Jensen's top-tier line of dealer installed car audio equipment) packs nearly every bell and whistle that the company offers into a clean and easy-to-use double din receiver. They've even upgraded the interface with cleaner, updated graphics. Check us out as we check it out on the floor at CES 2009.

Add LCD monitors to cars without ruining your headrests

Rear seat entertainment is a pretty cool feature in a vehicle. It adds a little bling to your ride keeping the children quiet in the back seat during longer drives. The problem with installing a rear seat entertainment system is that, typically, you have to either hang a monitor in a bag from the seatback with unsightly straps, which still flops around during spirited driving, or have big rectangular holes cut in your headrests--or worse, your headliner--to accommodate the screens.

The Advent Quick Connect aims to bridge that gap with simple installation, requiring no permanent alterations to the vehicle's … Read more

Zoho to Salesforce: Let us onto Force.com

After Tuesday, Barack Obama and John McCain will (presumably) bury the hatchet and move on with their lives. I'm not quite sure I can say the same thing about the respective heads of Zoho and Salesforce.com.

Sridhar Vembu, CEO of AdventNet, the company behind the Zoho suite of online applications, has again called out Marc Benioff in a public post accusing Salesforce of attempting to "block customers from migrating to Zoho CRM."

Earlier this year, Vembu publicized details of negotiations he had with Salesforce in a bid to make Zoho work with AppExchange, an online marketplace … Read more

Advent 4211: It's the MSI Wind, but cheaper

Want an MSI Wind but can't afford the asking price? You have two options: start selling the Big Issue or run down to PC World and cop yourself an Advent 4211--a virtually identical, but far cheaper alternative to the Wind.

It uses the same chassis, has the same specification, but it costs just 280 pounds (about $551). How? It's quite simple: MSI is an ODM (original design manufacturer), which means it makes bare-bones chassis for its own use and to sell to other companies, known as SIs (system integrators).
