AC/DC finally coming to iTunes

AC/DC, known for such heavy metal hits as "Back in Black," "Thunderstruck," and Highway to Hell" will finally be rocking iTunes.

Apple announced today that the band has made its entire catalog available for download. Fans can buy the whole albums or individual songs. AC/DC was one of the high-profile acts, a group that once included The Beatles and Kid Rock, choosing not to distribute their music at online stores.

The partnership is a stark reversal from 2008, when AC/DC refused to sell individual songs. Brian Johnson, the group's lead singer … Read more

Nokia Prodigy and AC/DC are Windows Phone prototypes

Hell's bells! Nokia is on the highway to hell with two prototype Windows Phones, code-named the AC/DC and the Prodigy.

Nokia's two rockin' Windows Phone devices are expected to go on tour later in the year when Windows Phone 8 arrives onstage.

The Prodigy is reported to be a high-end Windows Phone--perhaps capable of taking your brain to another dimension, so pay close attention. Whether it'll be an equal to the current headliner on the Nokia Lumia bill, the Nokia Lumia 900, or will be an even more powerful firestarter remains to be seen. Everybody in the place--let's phone!

AC/DC Pinball, for those about to rock

Have you ever tried buying an AC/DC album on iTunes? Don't bother. It's not there. Unlike those sellouts, The Beatles, AC/DC is too cool for that crap.

So what better way to honor the world's most tenaciously old-school rock gods than to give them their own pinball machine? I mean, it's about time someone showed The Who, that serious pinball geeks deserve a more rocking anthem than "Pinball Wizard."

The AC/DC Pro, currently in production by Stern Pinball, weighs in at a whopping 250 pounds, and can be yours for around $… Read more

Wal-Mart MP3 store relaunches

Correction: AC/DC's 1981 album For Those About to Rock We Salute You peaked at #1 on the U.S. charts, which means Wal-Mart's press release is wrong.

American retail giant Wal-Mart relaunched its online MP3 store Tuesday, and it's a worthy competitor to Amazon in the DRM-free MP3 sweepstakes. (To remind you: unlike many songs from Apple's iTunes, or Microsoft's Zune Marketplace, or Nokia's music store, every song sold on Amazon and Wal-Mart can be played an unlimited number of times on just about any portable device and in any software application out … Read more

AC/DC's iTunes boycott is on Highway to Hell

AC/DC, the iconic Australian rock band, has been talking to reporters as part of the promotion of its upcoming album. The group has also used the opportunity to take swipes at Apple.

The band refuses to offer music at iTunes because it isn't interested in selling individual songs. The only places to acquire the album, Black Ice, is at Wal-Mart Stores or on the band's Web site. In an interview with Reuters, lead singer Brian Johnson said the band is trying to protect the album format.

"Maybe I'm just being old-fashioned, but this iTunes, God … Read more

Tech companies aim to untangle power supplies

SAN FRANCISCO--Oh, what a tangled web we weave when plugging in and powering personal electronics whose chargers are so varied that they typically end up balled up in rat's nests beneath our desks.

Help, albeit slow, is on the way, according to members of consumer electronics companies, green-tech start-ups, and venture capital firms at the Alliance for Universal Power Supplies conference Friday.

Attendees charging ahead to create power supplies that cause fewer headaches and wasted energy found hope when Westinghouse announced that it will support standards from start-up Green Plug, whose Greentalk protocol enables devices and power sources to &… Read more

George and Zeppelin go digital

Last week, George Harrison--who created the best post-Beatles solo album, the gorgeous All Things Must Pass--became the fourth of the Fab Four to go online. His full solo catalog is available on iTunes and other music stores now. Today, Led Zeppelin confirmed that its entire catalog will be released online Nov. 13, not just the songs on the new greatest hits compilation, Mothership. Zeppelin will also follow AC/DC and sell its songs as ringtones on Verizon Wireless.

Surely, the full Beatles must be next?

Monsters of rock go digital

Among last week's digital music news was the item that seminal hard rock band AC/DC has taken a tentative step on the information highway (as opposed to that other highway). AC/DC's deal with Verizon was notable because the band chose to bypass industry leader iTunes, and because the band is selling only complete albums (for $12 apiece--higher than the current price of their CDs on Amazon!) rather than individual singles. Another oddity: most of AC/DC's catalog will be not be downloadable over-the-air to Verizon phones; instead, users will have to download the albums to … Read more
