T-Mobile Dash

Breaking up is hard to do

The Palm Pre that CNET shipped to me is actually my second Pre. This post explains my decision to buy it and make the switch to Sprint. The second Pre is currently in the possession of my less tech-obsessed partner, and I'll write about her experiences in a future post.

Why I left T-Mobile and signed up with Sprint.

Before I got the Palm Pre I had the T-Mobile Dash for a little over three years. The Dash was a fine first smartphone: good size, excellent keyboard, and fairly good screen considering the size. It came with Windows Mobile 5, an expansion slot, and, with a little hackery you could easily find instructions for on the internet, internet access for six dollars. There was also a fairly healthy developer community so I bought a few cheap applications that made life easier: calendar, tasks, password manager, and sms threading to name a few. … Read more

T-Mobile Dash 3G priced and reviewed

The poor T-Mobile Dash has been pulling duty ever since October 2006, and while it's received a minor face-lift and Windows Mobile 6.1 upgrade over the years, it's definitely time for the smartphone to retire. More importantly, T-Mobile customers need and deserve something more up-to-date, and it looks like the T-Mobile Dash 3G is set to deliver.

First announced for the carrier on June 17, T-Mobile revealed on Wednesday night that the Dash 3G will be available starting July 8 for $169.99 with a two-year contract. For that price, you get a number of welcome additions, … Read more

T-Mobile Dash 3G coming in July; more Android details next week

For those of you who don't care about a certain phone from a certain fruit-flavored company, you might be interested to know that T-Mobile announced on Wednesday the upcoming availability of its latest smartphone, the T-Mobile Dash 3G.

The Dash 3G is T-Mobile's take on the HTC Snap, which debuted at CTIA 2009. The carrier expects the smartphone to ship nationwide in July, though it did not release a specific date or pricing at this time. Sprint also announced that it will offer the HTC Snap on June 21 for $149.99 with a two-year contract, so we … Read more

Borders of Computing: The gear

While pen and paper is still the most important gear for any reporting effort, I did use a bunch of other technology in making this series possible.

1. Panoramic lens from 0-360.com

This was the piece of gear I was most excited about. Basically, it allows an immersive panoramic movie to be created from a single still photo. (The folks at 0-360.com were kind enough to lend a review unit for CNET to use on this trip.)

It's a custom lens that fit on top of my Canon Digital Rebel XT. To achieve the effect, the lens … Read more

Photos: HTC Cavalier S630 (unlocked)

As many of you know, the world of tech can be such a frustrating waiting game. Companies will tease you by announcing a hot little product, but it can be months and months before it actually comes to market. Take the HTC Cavalier S630, for example. The successor to the T-Mobile Dash already has passed FCC tests but we're still waiting for an official carrier and availability announcement. Lucky for us, we were able to get an unlocked version of the Windows Mobile 6 smart phone from Mobile Planet, so take a look at our slide show, and check … Read more

HTC gems unearthed? Rumors pick up on HTC Omni and HTC Cavalier

What's this? A non-iPhone news item? Yes, believe it. And if the rumors are true, then we've got some really craveworthy gadgets here. First up is the HTC Omni (rendering pictured right). The supposed upgrade to the HTC Universal (which sadly never landed here in the States) and related to the HTC Advantage, the Omni is said to have a 4-inch, 800x480-pixel WVGA display and VGA and TV outputs. In addition, the Windows Mobile 6 device is equipped with GPS, UMTS/HSDPA, Bluetooth, a 400MHz Samsung SC244X processor, 128MB of RAM, and a full QWERTY keyboard. Again, … Read more
