Interest in deploying open-source clouds is rising--survey

As interest in open-source cloud computing continues to grow, a new--albeit self-interested--survey shows that users are looking to move from experiments to production deployments.

Today, systems management software provider Zenoss released the results of what they've titled the "OpenStack Adoption Survey". (OpenStack is an open-source cloud operating system.) The data was culled from 772 surveys filled out at the recent OpenStack Conference in Boston and the Zenoss open source management community.

Ubuntu shifts to OpenStack for cloud

Future versions of Ubuntu Cloud will be based on the OpenStack cloud project.

The shift, announced yesterday at the Ubuntu Developer Summit in Budapest, Hungary, means that Eucalyptus--once the core cloud for Ubuntu--has been sidelined in favor of OpenStack.

"The Ubuntu team has been working closely with the OpenStack project and this will form a strong basis for [the] Ubuntu Cloud product in the future," Canonical--which stewards the commercial development of Ubuntu--said in a statement yesterday. "This decision clarifies the direction of Ubuntu Cloud over the next 12 months, as the project moves towards the long term … Read more

Cisco throws networking into OpenStack cloud

Cisco Systems, one of the world's largest technology companies, signaled last week that it has more than a passing interest in cloud infrastructure by submitting a design for OpenStack: Network as a Service (NaaS).

Cisco's proposal is not the first for NaaS, but I believe it signifies an important acceptance not just of a change to the way that we consume compute and networking but a shift in how big companies will make OpenStack both the literal and metaphorical Apache Web server for cloud services.

The networking component of both public and private clouds has been woefully underserved, … Read more

What's next for OpenStack's cloud efforts

Last month's launch of the open-source OpenStack project garnered a great deal of attention from the media and cloud followers, as it promised a new option for building and launching their own internal and hosted clouds.

This week, Chief Stacker Jim Curry posted an update on the OpenStack blog, outlining what new updates and features will be released in the new version, expected to land on October 21.

The official version of the OpenStack API. In addition to the functionality available in the Rackspace Cloud API, OpenStack will be add functionality related to role-based access controls and networking actions. … Read more
