Modern platform games for iOS

Despite the realistic 3D graphics of today's first-person shooters, RPGs, and other games, platform games continue to thrive on iOS. There's something about jumping through levels, solving puzzles, and collecting coins that keeps gamers entertained. Also, the capability to play through a single level while on the go makes platformers perfect for short bursts of play on your iOS device.

While a console controller is probably the ideal way to play these sometimes precise running and jumping games, iOS game developers have come up with unique ways to make them work.

This week's collection of iOS apps is all about modern platform games. The first is the most traditional platformer, but adds an interesting twist for passing levels. The second has an uncommon control system, but a unique art style and fun, varied gameplay make it a great option. The third is the most polished of the collection, with challenging puzzles and a somewhat grotesque storyline.

Note: There are no Android versions for any of these games.… Read more

T-Mobile welcomes Huawei-made myTouch, myTouch Q

Just when you thought that T-Mobile couldn't possibly confuse us more with its myTouch family of smartphones, here come reboots of the myTouch and myTouch Q, this time made by Huawei rather than by LG.

The two new Android 2.3 Gingerbread handsets feature 4G, a 4.0 WVGA touch screen, a 1.4GHz processor, a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash, and a front-facing camera.

You'll also find Swype's virtual keyboard on baord and T-Mobile's signature Genius button. Add a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, and you have yourself a myTouch Q rather than the myTouch.

Liquid physics games for iOS

I often write about action games in my collections, and it's no secret I'm a fan of the racing-game genre as well. But another genre I like to play while on my commute is mind-twisting puzzle games. A new game was released a few days ago that has jumped to the top of the charts at iTunes App Store and it has all the bells and whistles to remain a hit.

Though puzzle games come in a lot of different forms, one of my favorite types is those that use realistic physics. Some of the best I have come across use liquid physics and require you to experiment in order to solve each puzzle.… Read more

Some great games have come out recently that are worthy of any puzzle-gaming fan's iPhone. All of these titles are worthy of checking out, because they have plenty of challenge, are all very polished graphically, and are perfect for when you want to put your brain-teaser skills to the test.… Read more

Leaked T-Mobile roadmap reveals Android galore

T-Mobile's fall roadmap landed online earlier this week, tipping the carrier's device plans for October and November. Judging by the look of things, T-Mobile is betting heavily on Android for smartphones and tablets as the fourth quarter gets underway.

Two of the handsets listed, the HTC Amaze 4G and Samsung Galaxy S II, were recently announced by T-Mobile and will be available on October 12. According to the roadmap, there will be a third smartphone arriving a few days later on October 19 in the form of a Huawei "Wayne." Considering the $99 price (with contract), … Read more

Is the T-Mobile MyTouch 4G Slide camera really all that?

HTC has been pushing the 8-megapixel camera on the T-Mobile MyTouch 4G Slide hard, mostly for its low-light capabilities and its "zero shutter lag." I won't dispute that it delivers excellent photo quality overall, and that it's a great camera to use, but calling it the "most advanced smartphone camera" on the market is going too far.

To see just where it triumphs and fails in executing still photography, I spent several days shooting outdoor, indoor, low light, and well-lit photos with four smartphones around the San Francisco Bay Area: the MyTouch 4G Slide, … Read more
