Judge nixes class action suit in employee poaching case for now

A federal judge has decided not to elevate an antitrust lawsuit over non-poaching agreements to class action status. But the ruling is far from final.

In a decision announced today, U.S. District Court Judge Lucy Koh said there was not yet enough evidence to turn a present civil suit against seven technology companies into a class action lawsuit, according to Reuters.

The case refers to a civil suit filed in 2011 by five workers against Google, Intuit, Apple, Intel, Adobe, Pixar, and Lucasfilm, claiming that the companies tried to keep down wages through non-poaching agreements.

Nokia backs Apple in legal skirmish against Samsung

Apple has finally found an ally in its fight for a sales ban of Samsung phones.

On Monday, Nokia filed a brief with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington backing Apple in its bid for a permanent injunction of certain Samsung phones, Reuters reported yesterday.

Though the brief itself was sealed, a summary from Nokia said that the court was wrong to deny Apple's request.

Nokia attorney Keith Broyles argued that U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh in San Jose, Calif., made a mistake when she said that Apple must show a "… Read more

Judge: Samsung didn't 'willfully' infringe Apple patents

U.S. District Court Judge Lucy Koh handed down some of her first post-trial rulings from the much publicized Apple v. Samsung patent case this evening.

In a 32-page order filed today, the judge said she predominantly agreed with the jury's decision that Samsung infringed on seven of Apple's design and utility patents. However, she disagreed with one finding -- that Samsung "willfully" infringed on Apple's patents.

What this means is that Apple will now be unable to triple its damage awards. If Koh had agreed with the jury on this decision, Apple could have … Read more

Apple v. Samsung: Why is Judge Koh so angry?

Lucy Koh is chewing someone out again.

Anyone following the Apple v. Samsung patent trial has noticed the frequency with which Koh, the U.S. district judge presiding over the case, has scolded lawyers from both sides.

The most vivid example came last week, when Apple lawyers notified Koh that they wished to cram a large number of witnesses into the remaining few hours they had to make their arguments. This would have added to the mountain of paperwork and generated more work for Koh and her staff.

"Come on," Koh told Bill Lee, one of Apple's … Read more

Apple v. Samsung: Judge Koh loses cool over legal wrangling

U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh has had her fill of courtroom "theatrics" and questionable legal maneuvering from both sides in the Apple v. Samsung patent trial.

"I want papers," Koh told the court on Tuesday after Apple objected to one of Samsung's witnesses. "I don't trust what any lawyer tells me in this courtroom. I want to see actual papers."

Koh was obviously frustrated when Apple and Intel tried to block Tim Williams, Ph.D., one of Samsung's expert witnesses from testifying. Apple said Williams had not properly disclosed that … Read more

Google loves Lucy with a doodle

Google loves Lucy.

In order to demonstrate that love, the company's doodlers have created something special for Lucille Ball's 100th birthday.

Well, it would have been her 100th birthday today, but Lucy is sadly no longer with us.

Still, in a blog post, Google doodler Jennifer Hom explained: "Lucy's creativity, absurdity, and ever-changing facial expressions (especially when she was scarfing down candy, stomping on grapes, or touting a new energy drink) have brought joy and laughter to generations of viewers."

Google's doodle offers a click and play feature, through which you can watch clips … Read more

A visit to the CBS vault

The U.S. government has Fort Knox, families have safety deposit boxes, and gym-goers have lockers--sacred places where valuable things are stored and protected. To extend the analogy, content companies like CBS have libraries; catalogues of hits old and new that represent the foundation of the entertainment business and the source of current and future income. We call ours the content vault. Check it out in the above video.

In any business, the key to long-term success is seeing beyond the flavor of the month to consistently create and sell a stellar product. At CBS, our biggest asset is and … Read more

TVs from the golden age

Now this is retro. While other gadget makers waste their time with reproductions of phones and alarm clocks, Telstar Electronics is doing right by TV designs of yesteryear under its "Predicta" brand.

Despite their distinctive '50s look, Brandish says these sets are outfitted with modern technology such as DVD and stereo hookups. Pictured here is one of the more eye-catching versions, which it describes this way: "The Meteor, the quirkiest of the models, is designed by Mike L. Scott and has aircraft/UFO inspired legs, a hand-built hardwood cabinet and a 24-inch screen, which pivots on a … Read more
