Glow

Glowing plants could act as biological night lights

Humans have a lot in common with magpies. We gravitate toward shiny things.

It's easy, then, to see why the Glowing Plants project on Kickstarter has more than doubled its goal and still has 38 days to go. It's a fascinating mix of botany, science, and unexpected glowing things.

Some people can boast a green thumb, but very few people can boast a glowing green thumb. For a pledge of $40, Glowing Plants will send you 50 to 100 seeds to let you raise your own glowing plant at home. The project's creators say that this is a one-off opportunity and the seeds will not be available commercially later on.… Read more

Neon waterfalls illuminate nature at night

There's something beautiful and futuristic about bright neon lights against a natural background.

In a stunning series of images called "Neon Luminance," San Francisco multimedia group From the Lenz used long-exposure photography to capture glow sticks traveling down a waterfall. The resulting pictures look straight out of a science fiction movie featuring a strange new world unlike our own. … Read more

The Glowing Void 3 Review

For the first few minutes we spent playing The Glowing Void 3, we weren't quite sure what the goal was. There was no tutorial and the "obvious" (i.e. wrong) action kept getting us killed. When we finally found the instructions, the game became a revelation, providing a unique spin on the block-breaking concept that it is built on. With five different game modes, dozens of ways to win (and lose), and a fair difficulty arc that really challenges your reflexes and thought speed, this is a very solid and enjoyable iOS game.

The game's core … Read more

Take a drive down the 'Route 66 of the future'

Dutch designer Daan Roosegaarde thinks we drive on dumb roads. So he teamed with mega European construction company Heijmans Infrastructure to create a vision of a "smart highway" for the Netherlands -- and possibly the rest of the world.

Perhaps the most exciting aspect of these future roads is the fact that two concepts of the bunch -- glow-in-the-dark roads and dynamic paint -- should arrive by mid-2013. The group plans to introduce the rest of the concepts before 2015, giving the world a glimpse at how technology could revolutionize the way we drive by making it a safer and more sustainable experience. … Read more

Forget iPhone purple haze, now there's the green glow

The iPhone 5 appears doomed to suffer from glitches involving different colors.

Following the "purple haze" issue found in some iPhone 5-shot photos, some users are now complaining of a "green glow" found on the display. The green glow is described as appearing on the edge of the screen like plasma bleed, and occurs when the phone is woken out of sleep mode. The Guardian was the first to point this out, citing complaints from a number of different forums.

The green glow supposedly appears for just a split second, but some users complained that the … Read more

Shining light on new Kindle Paperwhite

Monday's CNET Update has a glow about it:

Apple has released a Wi-Fi bug fix for the iPhone 5 on Verizon. The bug caused the iPhone 5 to use data even when the device was connected to a Wi-Fi network. Verizon won't charge iPhone 5 customers for any excess data as a result of the bug, but customers should download the fix … Read more

Nook GlowLight e-reader price drops to $119

As Amazon gets set to ship out the Kindle Paperwhite, its new e-ink e-reader that features an integrated light, its chief rival appears to be getting a price cut. At least two major retailers -- Target (shown above) and Wal-Mart -- are now advertising the Nook Simple Touch With GlowLight for $119. That's $20 less than the original $139 price, and the exact cost of the entry-level Paperwhite (which, unlike the Nook, includes "Special Offers" ads).

When Barnes & Noble introduced the Nook GlowLight earlier this year, it had problems keeping up with demand (it later admitted … Read more

Kilo: We want to ride this glow-in-the-dark bike

Safely riding a bike at night requires a bright headlight and reflectors at the very minimum, but Kilo, labeled as "the very first glow-in-the-dark bike," could change the game.

The concept of a glow-in-the-dark bike isn't totally new, as Zach Schau, co-founder of Kilo's parent company Pure Fix Cycles acknowledged in a phone call with Crave. Schau did suggest, however, that Kilo represents the first mass-produced glow-in-the-dark bicycle at a low price point (Puma experimented with the idea in 2008, but that version cost more than a grand). … Read more
