Contour updates line-topping action camera, reveals Contour+2

Contour's line-topping Contour+ HD sports camera would have been one of our favorites, but we hesitated to recommend it because Contour's own less-expensive cameras, the ContourGPS and the ContourRoam, were cheaper, more rugged, and easier to use.

With the debut of the new Contour+2, the replacement for the previous flagship, the camera maker draws from the lessons that it's learned with all of its previous action camera models, with a lower price and even picking up a few tricks from the competition.… Read more

Contour launches activity-specific camera mount kits

One of the draws of HD sports cameras like the ContourHD series (or the GoPro HD Hero) is that they feature a wide variety of mounting options, making them useful in a wide variety of activities. However, purchasing all of the available mounting accessories can get expensive, which is why Contour has announced a series of activity-themed mounting kits that bundle specific mounting accessories at a 10 to 20 percent discount over buying the bits separately.

The Moto mount kit that Car Tech fans are no doubt most interested in sells for $99.99 and features a rotating surface mount, … Read more

Skiing showdown: Helmet cams go head-to-head

You might think the 200 marked runs at Whistler Blackcomb Ski Resort in British Columbia would be enough for most skiers.

But just before Christmas, my two teenage boys, a friend and his two teenage sons, and I scoped out a largely untouched stash of snow in an area called Flute Bowl. No chairlifts scaled that part of the mountain, so we hit the slopes early, made our way over to Flute Bowl, kicked off our skis, and hiked 45 minutes to the top.

It was a cloudless day, and on the ridge, we were rewarded with spectacular views of the Coast Mountain range. Then we got to ski the wide open bowl, and the remains of powder that had fallen a few days earlier, all to ourselves. It was one of those moments worth capturing.

So we did. The boys, my buddy, and I fastened two helmet cams--the GoPro HD Hero 2 Outdoor Edition and the Contour Roam--on our lids and tested them to figure out which one we liked best.… Read more

Helmet cam maker Contour adds live streaming with Cerevo deal

LAS VEGAS--Helmet-cam maker Contour is teaming with Toyko-based Cerevo to give skiers, cyclists, and others the ability to stream the video they shoot live to the Web.

Contour's top-of-the-line $500 Contour+ will connect with an HDMI cable to Cerevo's $300 LiveShell, a deck of cards-sized gadget, to stream live video to Ustream's Web site. The deal will let the athletes--recreational and professional--show off their coolest tricks or their biggest wipeouts as they happen.

"It's a perfect complement to our Contour+ camera model," Contour Chief Executive Marc Barros said in a statement about the deal, … Read more

ContourRoam is the simplest HD sports camera yet

We've often praised Contour's line of sports cameras for their ease of use, but with the announcement of the ContourRoam, it's about to get even easier.

The Roam fits into the entry-level position in Contour's camera lineup, just below the Contour GPS and replacing the ContourHD 1080p, which should be phased out shortly. At first glance, the Roam doesn't appear much different than the ContourHD (or any other Contour camera for that matter) but closer inspection reveals a few new features.

For starters, there is no power button. Where previous models needed to be powered … Read more

Contour+ is our new favorite sports camera

There's a new king of the sports camera hill and it's called the Contour+. This camera packs in every trick in Contour's book, including GPS location technology, smartphone connectivity via Bluetooth, and an established rail-mounting system. It also brings a few new tricks in the form of an HDMI output, a microphone input, and a higher-quality, superwide-angle lens.

Here's a wee bit of inside baseball: If you've checked out a recent episode of Car Tech Live, you've likely already seen the Contour+ in action. We've been using the HD sports camera to record the in-car footage for our On the Road segment for the past month. We've found that while not nearly as rugged as our previous favorite, the GoPro HD Hero, the Contour+ hardware is much easier to use, particularly when paired with the free Contour app for iPhone. (An Android version is just around the corner.)

Check out the full review of the Contour+ to see just how it earned our Editors' Choice award.… Read more

Rumor: iPhone 5 may use curved glass screen

The latest news to hit the iPhone 5 rumor mill is that Apple's next smartphone may sport a curved glass screen, similar to the one found on the iPod Nano 4G.

This latest report comes from Taiwan's DigiTimes. Citing industry sources, DigiTimes reported today that Apple has bought 200 or 300 glass-cutting machines to be used by glass makers, who are apparently hesitant to invest in the expensive equipment on their own.

To no surprise, no time frame has been released yet as to when the iPhone 5 may ramp up production, as DigiTimes says that Apple is … Read more

Contour sports cameras go semi-pro with new Contour+

The ContourHD and ContourGPS sports cameras are compact, rugged, and (most importantly) inexpensive action cameras that are great for recording epic videos of extreme sports. We use a few of them (along with the competing GoPro HD Hero cam) to record segments for our Car Tech videos and we see them all of the time at motorsports events suctioned to the hoods and roofs of high-powered race cars and auto enthusiasts' daily drivers. Not to rest on its laurels, Contour is adding an upper tier to its line of sports cameras with the Contour+, a prosumer level HD camera that … Read more
