It's finals week at UC Davis, and the campus is gearing up to help students who may find themselves in crisis mode with today's launch of a mobile-friendly Web site that directs them to the most appropriate resources on campus and beyond. The service could be life-saving, given suicide is reportedly the second-leading cause of death among college students.… Read more
The Cupertino City Council on Tuesday gave its final approval to the construction of Apple's planned 176-acre Campus 2, better known as the company's "spaceship" campus.
The vote, largely a formality after the council unanimously approved construction of the 2.8-million-square-foot building last month, allows Apple to enter a 20-year development agreement with the city and pick up its official building permits on Wednesday. Apple plans to begin demolition of office buildings on the former Hewlett-Packard campus by the end of the year, with the first phase of construction expected to be completed by 2016.

Google has just thrown down $235 million to buy up some more office space in Mountain View, Calif., according to the Silicon Valley Business Journal. This is the company's largest land purchase so far for this year.
The money bought six buildings, or 400,000 square feet of office space, in the Silicon Valley town. Two of the buildings are currently leased to security software company Symantec. The Silicon Valley Business Journal speculates that Google may be looking to make some extra cash as a local landlord as it waits for Symantec's lease to expire.

Today, traces of the former tenant are still visible. But aside from the occasional Sun sign or logo, much of the campus' look and feel has been completely reimagined. Gone are the warrens of cubicles. Instead, Facebook has opted for clusters of desks to foster collaboration. The adequate, but rather ordinary, Sun Micro cafeteria has been replaced with Philz Coffee, the Burger Shack, and … Read more
Samsung is putting down roots in Silicon Valley. The South Korean tech manufacturer will be breaking ground in San Jose, Calif., this week on a massive research and development headquarters designed by the renowned NBBJ architecture firm.
The central 10-story building has an ultra-modern design, complete with a glass and white-metal covered exterior and two open-air floors. The parking garage is covered in a folding green-colored wall that looks like a vertical garden. When complete, the campus will be 1.1 million square feet.
In addition to the massive amounts of space, the campus will also provide a gym, cafes, … Read more
The latest fad for tech companies' new office buildings seems to involve making them as far-out and avant-garde as possible. And Amazon is the newest firm to jump on that train.
The e-commerce giant and gadget maker unveiled a slew of new drawings (PDF) on Tuesday that reveal a series of colossal, mirrored, biospherelike domes alongside a taller rectangular building that could be its new campus. The designs were created by architecture firm NBBJ and also include a copious amount of green space and landscaping.
The intent behind the design, according to the project proposal (PDF), is to "create an alternative environment" where "employees can work and socialize in a more natural, parklike setting."
"The generative idea is that a plant-rich environment has many positive qualities that are not often found in a typical office setting," the proposal says. "While the form of the building will be visually reminiscent of a greenhouse or conservatory, plant material will be selected for its ability to co-exist in a microclimate that also suits people." … Read more
As Apple waits for the city of Cupertino, Calif., to give the final thumbs-up for the design of its new spaceshiplike headquarters, the company has been tinkering with the details.
Cupertino published the software giant's project update for the headquarters on the city Web site on Wednesday. Included in the documents are the project description, site and landscaping plans, floor plans, renderings, and a bicycle plan.
While a ton of information was submitted, it appears that the basic essentials haven't changed too much. The building still looks like a circular spaceship; in fact, many of the renderings in … Read more
Apple's planned second corporate campus is turning out to be a headache.
That's according to Bloomberg Businessweek, which profiled the development process of the proposed "spaceship" building, an unusual structure shaped like a doughnut or ring.
The budget for the building has jumped to $5 billion from $3 billion, Bloomberg Businessweek said, citing unnamed sources. The cost would exceed that of the new World Trade Center and be three times as expensive as top-of-the-line downtown towers, the report said.
Apple, meanwhile, has delayed the start of construction as it works with its lead architect to slash $… Read more

"Congratulations," Menlo Park Mayor Peter Ohtaki told Facebook officials yesterday, according to the Mercury News. "Where's the 'Like' button?"
KIRKLAND, Wash. -- Google, which is already bursting out of its campus in Mountain View, Calif., is set to double its space here as well.
