Google axes UDID support with updated SDK for AdMob

Google released an AdMob SDK for iOS developers today that completes its transition away from allowing apps access to Unique Device Identifiers, weeks before Apple's official deadline for retiring the system.

UDIDs are the unique string of numbers that individually identifies each cellular device. Typically, they have been used by developers to track app installations across Apple's user base. Tracking users lets companies tailor advertising to each individual, but it also raises a host of privacy concerns.

In response to those concerns, Apple announced last month that, as of May 1, it would no longer accept new apps or app updatesRead more

YouTube, AdMob founders step down

YouTube co-founder and CEO Chad Hurley and AdMob founder and head Omar Hamoui are leaving their positions at the Google-acquired companies, according to reports.

Hurley told reporters at the F.ounders international Web conference in Dublin that he was in the process of transitioning out of his role at YouTube and that he would become an adviser to the video-sharing site and work on other projects at Google. (The Guardian has audio here.) Salar Kamangar, who's been the de facto head at YouTube for the past two years, will officially step into Hurley's role, according to The Wall … Read more

Google's AdMob delighted with new Apple policies

Count Google's AdMob division among those glad to see that Apple has had a change of heart regarding restrictions on App Store development.

Omar Hamoui, former CEO of AdMob and currently vice president of product management at Google, had been worried that changes to Apple's iPhone Developer Agreement prohibited developers from using AdMob's in-application advertising products--Apple had banned the use of third-party analytic data by companies "owned by or affiliated with a developer or distributor of mobile devices." But Apple's decision Thursday to strip its agreement of that language elicited a thank-you note from … Read more

AdMob CEO: Apple not enforcing ad restrictions

SAN FRANCISCO--Despite putting a scare into AdMob and its customers with its new policies on third-party ad networks, Apple has not yet enforced those policies, AdMob's CEO confirmed Tuesday.

Omar Hamoui, founder and CEO of Google's AdMob division, said it has been business as usual for AdMob's ad network customers seeking to place ads in iPhone applications ever since Apple inserted language into its iPhone Developer Agreement in June that appeared to kneecap ad networks owned by anyone competing with Apple in mobile computing, such as AdMob parent Google. "They haven't been enforcing (the new … Read more

Report: AdMob alive and well in iPhone apps

AdMob may not be locked out of iPhone applications just yet.

The Wall Street Journal reported Friday that application developers using AdMob as their in-app advertising provider are having their applications approved by Apple without incident, despite Apple's decision to change the terms of the iPhone developer agreement in a way that appeared to ban AdMob. Back in June, AdMob lashed out at Apple for making this change, saying, "this change is not in the best interests of users or developers."

The change to the agreement said that developers were not allowed to use ad networks that … Read more

AdMob: iPhone tops ad requests but Android surging

The iPhone still enjoys a commanding lead of all ad requests on AdMob's network. But the growth of Android phones continues to boost the share of Google's OS, according to AdMob's "May 2010 Mobile Metrics Report."

Released Wednesday, the new stats (PDF) peg the iPhone's share of all AdMob ad requests in May at 40 percent, down from almost 50 percent in May 2009. Android's share hit 26 percent, up from 5 percent a year ago.

Google in late May finalized its acquisition of AdMob, which gives the ad network more visibility but … Read more

AdMob lashes out at new iPhone ad policies

Updated 11:21 a.m. PDT with additional information.

After reviewing Apple's changes to its iPhone developer agreement, Google's AdMob reached the same conclusion that many others did: it could be screwed.

Apple this week changed the terms of the developer agreement that governs iPhone applications to prohibit developers from using advertising in their applications that shares analytic data with "an advertising service provider owned by or affiliated with a developer or distributor of mobile devices, mobile operating systems or development environments other than Apple." The most prominent mobile advertising service provider owned by or affiliated … Read more

Apple change could thwart Google's AdMob

Less than two weeks after Google completed its acquisition of iPhone ad network AdMob, Apple appears to have thrown Google quite the curveball.

Apple quietly changed the terms of service for the iPhone developer agreement Monday along with the release of developer version of iOS4 at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference, according to MediaMemo and several other blogs. If preliminary interpretations of a key section are correct, Google's newly acquired AdMob subsidiary will be unable to share ad analytic information with its customers who have placed ads in applications on the iPhone, rendering those ads much less valuable.

Section … Read more

Google closes books on AdMob deal

Google finally got its prize Thursday: AdMob is part of the family.

Truth be told, it would have really only been news if Google had failed to close the deal after the Federal Trade Commission said last week that it would not block the $750 million acquisition following a nearly six-month review. But, for the record, "Omar Hamoui has built a great team and great products at AdMob and we're thrilled to officially welcome them to Google," the company said in a blog post.

Google will repurchase shares of its company from public markets to offset the $… Read more

Android ownership hottest in North America

Google and its Android partners can thank customers in North America for the hot growth of smartphones sporting the mobile operating system.

Among all the Android devices owned around the world, 75 percent of them are in North America, according to AdMob's April Mobile Metrics Report, released Wednesday. That's followed by 11 percent owned in Western Europe and 12 percent in Asia. In contrast, 49 percent of devices running Apple's iPhone OS are in North America, with 28 percent owned in Western Europe and 14 percent in Asia.

Though consumer demand for Android has been climbing, the … Read more
