Saab 9-4X Crossover comes to U.S. showrooms

Saab's all-new 9-4X crossover debuted last year at the L.A. Auto Show, and now it is rolling into U.S. showrooms.

Developed with former owner General Motors, the 9-4X crossover was just awarded Top Safety Pick by Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Saab, now owned by the Dutch sports car maker Spyker, said that the first 9-4X was purchased last weekend at Saab North Olmstead in Cleveland, Ohio.

Most Saab 9-4Xs are headed for U.S.

LOS ANGELES--Saab expects 75 percent of 9-4X output to go to the United States. But even so, the number isn't large by industry standards.

The 9-4X is Saab's new crossover, developed with former owner General Motors Co.

9-4X output will average 12,500 units annually when full production is reached next year, said Jan Ake Jonsson, CEO of Saab Automobile AB. Jonsson said it is a conservative production forecast. About 9,400 are for the United States, he said.

Saab to unveil 9-4X at LA Auto Show

Saab released photos of its upcoming 9-4X crossover SUV that will be unveiled at the upcoming 2010 Los Angeles Auto Show.

The third addition to the Saab line up is an inherited product from the old GM roadmap, but it's a much needed vehicle to cater to the growing crossover segment if the brand is going to survive. In the U.S., the 9-4X will be available with either an entry-level 265 horsepower 3-liter V-6 engine or, in the top-of-the-line Aero trim, a 300 horsepower 2.8-liter V-6 turbo engine.
