Seagate's 2.5-inch enterprise hard drive hits 1TB

Consumers already have access to 3.5-inch desktop hard drives with up to 3TB of storage and portable external hard drives with 1.5TB, but business users have had to live with hard drives with much less space.

That changed today, as Seagate announced its latest in 2.5-inch enterprise hard drives, the 1TB Constellation.2.

According to the hard-drive maker, the drive is the first in its class to offer 1TB of storage and speeds of up to 6Gbps.

Note that 6Gbps hard drives already have been available from Seagate for consumers, but only in a larger 3.5-inch design. The advantage of the 2.5-inch design is the fact that it can be used in more compact applications as well as applications in which the 3.5-inch drives are used.… Read more

HighPoint adds RAID to 6Gbps SATA 3 controller cards

Back in November, HighPoint released the first SATA 3 6Gbps controller cards that add SATA 3 capability to existing computers. The company turned this up a notch Sunday by announcing the first SATA 3 6Gbps controller cards with built-in support for RAID configurations.

Apart from using the faster SATA 3 hard drive as a single drive, this means you now can now configure the device to offer still speedier performance or better data protection.

Seagate ships self-encrypting enterprise hard drives

Seagate has been busy at work. A day after it started shipping the first SATA 6Gbps hard drive, it now is shipping enterprise hard drives with self-encrypting features.

The hard drive maker announced Tuesday the worldwide availability of the Seagate Secure Self-Encrypting Drive (SED) option across its portfolio of enterprise-class hard drives. The products that come with this option include the Savvio (both the 15K.2 and 10K.3 versions), Constellation, and Cheetah 15K.7 drives.

Seagate's 6Gbps desktop hard drive now available

Six months after showing off the demo, Seagate announced Monday that it is now shipping what it says is the word's first 3.5-inch 6Gbps 2TB hard drive.

The drive is based on the third generation of the Serial ATA (SATA) standard, roughly called SATA3. The majority of existing hard drives use the SATA2 standard that caps at 3Gbps. Theoretically, the new 6Gbps standard's throughput could be fast enough to transfer the entire contents of a CD (about 800MB) in just one second.

Seagate demos 6Gbps hard-drive transfer speed

In collaboration with AMD, Seagate announced Monday its demonstration of a new hard drive Serial ATA (SATA) interface, tentatively called SATA3, that offers speeds up to 6Gbps, or 600MBps.

(SATA3, or SATA 6Gb/second, was developed by the Serial ATA International Organization under the Serial ATA Revision 3.0 specifications.)

Currently most consumer-grade computers use either the SATA or SATA2 interface that offers cap throughput speeds of 1.5Gbps and 3Gbps, respectively, or 150MBps and 300MBps.
