Movies to go? Try SMPlayer Portable

If open-source freeware has a weak spot, it's the hobbyist thing, and nowhere is that more evident than in media players. "Wait while it updates what? Font cache? I just want to hear 'Surfin' Bird!'" Many people are more than willing to forgo the advantages of open-source players for something easier to use.

MPlayer is an open-source media player optimized for playing movies, but it has a lot of options and capabilities, with more coming all the time. SMPlayer aims to be a unified front end for MPlayer, simplifying access to basic features such as playing videos … Read more

All Chrome, all the time

If you were looking for something besides Chrome news last week, you probably had to do a bit of digging. The popular Google browser dominated the Windows software space with a bevy of announcements. For one, version 8 will offer PDF file viewing directly within the browser window. That's right: that means no separate launching of Adobe's Reader app. Pretty nice, if you ask us.

Chrome also saw the arrival of a fast-encryption feature. The feature, dubbed False Start, is available in the latest version of the browser and serves to speed up secure communications. Perhaps unsurprisingly, these … Read more

The program allows users to change the file type (hidden, compressed, read-only, and so on) and adjust date and time stamps. Although the built-in Help file … Read more

Sony updates PSP Go firmware, games list

One of our biggest complaints about the PSP Go seems to be partially addressed today as the portable console officially goes on sale. Sony has updated the Go's firmware to 6.10, which introduces a new PlayStation Store interface and access to a much larger portion of original PSP games.

While the selection of games is still nowhere near complete, some notable titles added today are God of War: Chains of Olympus, Madden NFL 10, Gran Turismo, and MotorStorm: Arctic Edge. Also hitting the store today are PSP Minis, smaller, less-expensive download-only games that range in price from $5 … Read more
