Consumers who order the iPhone 5S through Apple's online store now face a wait of just one to three business days before the device ships.
The latest shipping estimate is good for virtually all models and sizes of the new iPhone, Wi-Fi-only as well as Wi-Fi+Cellular. Only the recently released unlocked, SIM-free version of the 5S still shows a wait time of one to two weeks. The new estimate also is a drop from the previous promise of three to five days.
The iPhone 5S has seen its wait time gradually drop as Apple's suppliers have ramped … Read more
A scene in the 2004 film "I, Robot" involves an army of rogue NS-5 humanoids establishing a curfew and imprisoning the citizens of Chicago, circa 2035, inside their homes. That's not how Knightscope envisions the coming day of deputized bots.
In its far less frightful future, friendly R2-D2 lookalikes patrol our streets, school hallways, and company campuses to keep us safe and put real-time data to good use. Instead of the Asimov-inspired NS-5, Knightscope, a Silicon Valley-based robotics company, is developing the K5.
Officially dubbed the K5 Autonomous Data Machine, the 300-pound, 5-foot-tall mobile robot will be … Read more
Nexus 5 owners hoping to snap better pictures will get some help from Android 4.4.1.
Due to launch in the next few days, the latest Android update is geared toward fixing and enhancing the Nexus 5's picture-taking ability, The Verge said on Thursday. Speaking with Google's Director of Engineering Dave Burke, The Verge learned that the changes fall into different categories.
The Nexus camera's autofocus, exposure, and white balance have been improved, reducing the motion blur that often cropped up in photos under certain conditions. The camera app is a second quicker, giving Nexus 5 … Read more
As 2013 draws to a close, Tim Cook has to be smiling.
Earlier this year it seemed that Apple would take a fall. Samsung and rest of the Android players were gaining momentum and share as Apple was slow to update its product portfolio and was seeing its profit margins decline. The stock went from from above $700 in September 2012 to below $400 in July 2013. Following the fall introduction of new products and good sales numbers for the holiday shopping season, however, the stock has climbed back above $560.
Perhaps Cook has been smiling all year, knowing that … Read more
Samsung rumors run rampant in this week's episode.
First, insiders are predicting that a "lite" version of the giant Note 3 could be released early next year. And, not even a year after the Samsung Galaxy S4 dropped, Sammy could already be gearing up to release the Galaxy S5. And this time, it might have a more-premium feel.
The biggest news this week, though, is the rumor that YouTube is working on a subscription-based service called "Music Pass." Imagine ad-free YouTubing. Sounds good to me.
Thanks for watching!

Some pretty crazy specs for a mysterious new Samsung phone have shown up in benchmark results over at GFXBench, leading much of the Internet to wonder if the handheld in question could be the successor to the Galaxy S4.
Rumors have already started to flow about an upcoming Galaxy S5, including word of a unibody metal design, a 16-megapixel camera, 3GB of RAM, and perhaps even an accelerated release schedule that could place the new Android flagship as little as two to three months away.
If the new benchmarks are real, and the model in question really is the Galaxy S5 -- both certainly "ifs" at this point -- then we have a little better picture of the heft of this phone.… Read more
The Samsung Galaxy S5 may be among five smartphones announced in the first quarter of 2014, reports ETNews (translated). While this is but one report, and from a not-always accurate source, the rumor dovetails with recent rumblings.
But, with new information coming in almost daily, it feels as if the device is almost ready for takeoff.
Google's Android ecosystem will be breathing down Apple's neck in 2014, according to IDC, which offered predictions for 2014.
Google Play/Android downloads and revenues "are making dramatic gains and the app ecosystem value gap will be significantly narrowed" with Apple in 2014, according to IDC. That was one of the predictions published Tuesday, among a bevy of predictions for 2014.
Here's what IDC said:
The mobile device onslaught will continue in 2014 with sales of tablets growing by 18% and smartphones by 12%. The Android community, led by Samsung, will maintain its volume advantage … Read more
