Review: Display or save video from your webcam with EvoCam for Mac

Web site managers may want the ability to broadcast video directly to the Internet. EvoCam for Mac allows users to stream video or save it for later use, all in a well-designed interface that is easy to use.

EvoCam for Mac offers a free trial version with a 15-day usage limit. The full version costs $30 to unlock. The program downloaded quickly and came with a separate instruction file, which was relatively easy to follow. The program menu was clear and immediately brought up a screen for video capture. Boost your computer's hard drive with Auslogic Disk Defrag Pro

Why settle for the default Disk Defragmenter in Windows when this powerful download is available? Auslogic Disk Defrag Pro offers better performance, more customization, and better statistics than most defragmenting programs. However, its top competitor is the free version of the software, which boasts most of the features you'll love about the paid version. They're just presented in a less polished package.

This software comes with a 30-day trial, but that's more than enough time to clean up your disk and test out the scheduling features. As soon as you open the program, it asks you about … Read more

Free entertainment download manager

The YouTube Free Downloader is mainly an application for downloading and converting YouTube videos to MP3, but it also offers many other entertainment features.

The main feature of this software, the YouTube audio download, works really well. There appears to be only one format option (MP3), but most computers and devices do support that. The best part of this program is that you can search for a song or an artist's name as well as enter the URL. Many similar apps usually need a URL. With this, you can search through a list and find the one that best … Read more

Bubble blast

We've seem numerous iterations of games like Bubble Shooter 4, a puzzle game that involves shooting colored bubbles at other bubbles of the same color to clear them from the board. Bubble Shooter 4 is neither the best nor worst that we've encountered in this genre, but there is one thing we can say for it: we ended up playing it for way longer than we had intended.

The game has an underwater theme, and gameplay is overseen by a cranky-looking mermaid. The game board is filled with bubbles of various colors, and a pointer at the bottom … Read more

Untethered iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak tool released

Although an iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak has been around for a couple months, it came with a catch: if you ever had to reboot your device, you'd have to connect (i.e. tether) it to your computer in order to start using it again.

That's a semi-major inconvenience; if your battery died while you were on the go, you wouldn't be able to use your iPhone, iPod, or iPad again (even if recharged) until you got back to your PC.

Needless to say, people have been itching to get their hands on an "untethered" … Read more

Report: Apple drops jailbreak detection API from iOS 4.2.1

After introducing an API that allowed developers to check on an iOS device to see if its operating system had been compromised (read: jailbroken) less than six months ago, Apple has now unexpectedly dropped the functionality from iOS 4.2.1.

The jailbreak detection API was part of the mobile device management (MDM) API which was introduced with iOS 4 in June this year, according to NetworkWorld. Now, device management vendors say Apple has dropped the API while also saying that there are alternatives to checking on whether an iOS device has been jailbroken.

So, it remains a mystery as … Read more

Untethered iOS 4.2.1 jailbreaking workaround

Though this isn't the official untethered jailbreaking solution for iOS 4.2.1, the iPhone Dev Team has produced a short demo video showing off a workaround method for getting it done now.

Hack-master comex is still working on the permanent untethered jailbreak, but if you've been following the jailbreaking community and happen to have saved SHSH blobs from your iOS device, your device could be jailbroken today.

A more efficient iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak should be just around the corner, so stay tuned. For more information about jailbreaking your iOS device, follow the iPhone Dev Team Blog. … Read more

Network congestion issues? Apple has you covered with iOS 4.2.1

Tests conducted by Nokia Siemens Networks confirmed that Apple has included support for the Network Controlled Fast Dormancy technology developed by Nokia to reduce network congestion and improve battery life in iOS 4.2.1.

The NCFD technology works by keeping smartphones in a perpetual "intermediate state" and "makes the network and the handset work together to create the best conditions for smartphones to work quickly, yet have a long battery life and minimize network congestion."

As smartphones continue to add functionality via Apps, the threat of constant signaling on networks from those Apps could cause … Read more

iOS 4.2.1 Mobile Safari adds goodies for developers

With the release of Apple's iOS 4.2.1 software update, developers gain access to several new goodies including accelerometer and gyroscope support, WebSockets support through HTML5, printing support, new JavaScript data types, and enhanced SVG and Canvas support.

By supporting the DeviceOrientation API, Web developers can now use the accelerometer (and gyroscope) when developing Web applications and games. This opens the door for a much more robust environment on the Web and lets developers experiment freely (and continually) without the need to wait for Apple's App Store approval process.

Web developer and blogger Maximiliano Firtman has provided … Read more

iOS 4.2.1 jailbroken, available now

With Apple's recent release of the latest version of its mobile operating system, iOS 4.2.1, still warm on everyone's plate, the iPhone Dev Team has successfully jailbroken the update.

Thanks to a combination of past hacks (pwnage2, arm7_go, 24kpwn, and limera1n), the iPhone Dev Team was able to crack through the iOS 4.2.1 update, bringing people the capability to use jailbroken apps, games, and utilities on their iOS devices.

For those of you with an iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, or second-generation iPod Touch, the jailbreak method will remain just as simple. New iPod Touch … Read more
