Log-in session quits when running video in OS X 10.6.5

A few people on the Apple Discussion boards have described an issue that seems to have cropped up in OS X 10.6.5, where the system may force-quit the log-in session when attempting to play video.

This is not a widespread problem, but has affected a few people and seems to happen when they use certain media players that support hardware-accelerated video playback. When the crash occurs, the system may flash a blue or black screen and then present the log-in window, quitting all user applications and unsaved data. Not all video players spur this behavior, and the problem … Read more

Landscape printing of postscript files broken in OS X 10.6.5

MacFixIt reader "carrickp" recently wrote in describing a problem where the latest OS X 10.6.5 release has a bug in the Common Unix Printing System (CUPS) technology that will prevent postscript files from being printed in landscape view. This will affect many programs that handle postscript files, including those from Adobe.

When postscript files are printed using CUPS, they are converted by the "pstops" filter to a CUPS-specific postscript format which contains options for devices to handle the print job, such as duplexing, binding, and stapling, but also the organization of specific page ranges … Read more

Faulty updaters not updating to OS X 10.6.5

A number of people have mentioned not being able to update to OS X 10.6.5, especially when they have used the standalone Combo updaters that have been found at sites like MacUpdate. After installing these updates, they have found the system still to be running OS X 10.6.4.

When the OS X 10.6.5 update came out it first was only available via Software Update; even if Software Update sites had the standalone Combo and Delta updaters available, they likely linked to prior versions of OS X. These Web sites host legitimate software, so it … Read more
