ExcelReader read MS Excel file 1.06 Review

Smartphones and tablets are standard-issue in the business world, but they don't come with great Office software. This software, however, gives your smartphone the magical ability to read Excel spreadsheets from your phone. That is, if you can see through the numerous ads.

This is a reader app, which means it doesn't let you make any edits to the documents you read. The app doesn't actually work with the .xls format in Excel; instead in converts Excel files to PDF format to display them. That means you'll end up with two copies of the file, with … Read more

Xlaunchpad Application Launcher

For Windows users who covet the easy way a Mac organizes and launches app, XWidget Software Studio brings you Xlaunchpad, which is based on the Mac OS X Lion Launchpad.

Xlaunchpad, once installed, will run unobtrusively in the background until it is activated. Set up couldn't be easier -- just drag and drop the apps onto the interface. As promised, the program will create a folder if you drag one icon onto another, which we found to be a nice time saver when grouping similar apps together. And, it even supports multiple desktops if you want to further organize … Read more

Migrate your images with Migratr

There are a variety of photo-hosting sites on the Internet, each with its own pros and cons. Switching from one to the other isn't easy unless you have a little something to help you move your images between sites. Migratr might just be that little something. It's not perfect, but for the basic task of moving your photos en masse from one site to another, it's not bad.

The program's interface is straightforward, if not particularly attractive. The steps involved in migrating images are arranged in tabs numbered one through six. In the first step, users … Read more

See your fonts with FontViewer

Have you ever wanted to use a special font in a document (or anywhere) but had trouble simply figuring out which fonts you have and what they look like? We sure have, which is why we're always keen to try simple tools like Moo0's FontViewer. This compact freeware displays sample text in all the fonts installed in your system. You can adjust the size in points and display bold and italic characters, too. It doesn't install, modify, or access your fonts; it simply gives you a fast, easy way to see what they look like. But it'… Read more

Manage your spending with Weekly Budget

A wise person once said that using a budget doesn't keep you from having what you want, it helps you get what you want. Sticking to a budget can help you reach your financial goals, whether they include a vacation next summer or retirement 20 years from now. Weekly Budget is a set of simple Excel spreadsheets that can help you manage your money on a week-to-week basis. It's a surprisingly thorough budgeting solution, and we liked it a lot.

Weekly Budget provides two different worksheets: a weekly budget and a biweekly budget. Depending on how often you … Read more

Color call-out

Moo0 ColorPicker is a small and incredibly simple program, but oh, how we wish we'd known about it sooner! How we wish we could get back the hours we have spent trying to match the colors in custom Web site headers to colors in site templates, or trying to match a font color to some other element. Moo0 ColorPicker can easily identify the color of anything on your screen--any element in any application. It doesn't offer an impressive interface or a ton of features, but for what it is, it's fantastic.

The program isn't much to … Read more

Confusing interface a turn off

ProcessActivityView is supposed to give you a summary of the files and folders being accessed by a specific process. But thanks to its extremely confusing and poorly designed user interface, we had a difficult time discerning the information being fed to us.

The user interface appears as two separate windows. The first window displays all of your system's active processes, and the second window displays the file and folder access summary for a selected process. The first few times we made a process selection, nothing happened. A visit to the Help menu only offered us a link to the … Read more

Dining roulette

Curious diners have a new friend in Urbanspoon, a practical dining discovery app that shows a playful side when you let it. Otherwise, it gets to the serious business of finding you food. GPS or various forms of manual input shine a light on the restaurants nearby. While there's also browsing by popularity or neighborhood or searching by name, the most interesting and invigorating feature is the slot machine on the main screen. Enthusiastically shake the iPhone (or press "shake") to set individual wheels in motion. They'll randomly land on a nearby neighborhood, cuisine, and price … Read more
