Review: Picture IQ tests your image savvy

Picture IQ is challenging, thought provoking, and never-ending. Even though it's a basic puzzle game that features a format repeated often on the market, it still executes it very efficiently compared to its competitors.

Picture IQ installs and sets up incredibly fast. Within seconds, users will be playing the game with little or no instruction. The gameplay is very intuitive and the clean user interface adds to the usability. The four pictures that are displayed at the top half of the screen are clear and fairly easy to see. The images are not in the highest resolution and some … Read more

Ward off beasts in Dragon Warcraft for Android

The long, thin screens of smartphones make nifty platforms for tower defense games. Dragon Warcraft harkens back to old days of the genre -- you're actually defending a tower! The rich graphics and bevy of unlockable content make it one of the deeper games on Android. However, it's not for the faint of heart.

The game starts with a fairly large tutorial that sends tons of text at you as goblins storm your castle. These pop up occasionally with no way to opt out of them. Once you tap through all of those text overlays, you have a … Read more

Shoot the Zombirds to protect the Pumpkids!

It's perfectly acceptable to shoot zombies since they'll eat your brains if you don't. Slow, awkward, and noisy (all that moaning), zombies don't provide much of a challenge, though, and you'll probably get bored long before your ammo runs out. Birds are much harder to hit. The answer is obvious: zombie birds! Zombirds for short, as in Infinite Dreams' Shoot the Zombirds, a sequel to Shoot the Birds. Once again you're Pumpkin Boy, guardian of a spooky pumpkin patch. Your mission is to protect the Pumpkids from being carried off by hungry Zombirds. We … Read more

Lose Facebook's Timeline with TimeLine Remove

We happen to like Facebook's Timeline feature, but we know firsthand that there are plenty of people who don't. TimeLine Remove is a Firefox extension that can make both your own and other people's profiles appear in the old, pre-Timeline style. We think it's a good choice if you find yourself unable to get used to the new two-column layout.

TimeLine Remove installed easily and was ready to go without a browser restart. We went to Facebook and found that the extension worked as promised; we checked both our own profile and those of several other … Read more

CybEye is a waste of time

Every now and then we encounter a program that just doesn't make any sense, and CybEye, we're sorry to say, is one of those programs. If you'd like to save yourself the trouble of trying to figure out what CybEye is and whether or not it's useful, please allow us to help you out: it's mostly advertising, and it's about as useful as a hole in the head.

When we first launched the program we were asked to either sign in or create an account using our e-mail address, something we're never thrilled … Read more

One-stop shop

Over time, downloading files and browsing the Web can take their toll on your PC's performance. That's why periodic cleanings are important to keep your computer running on all cylinders. For that, you need a tool that can scour your hard disks for junk files. CCleaner Portable is just such a program, and it performed without a hitch.

CCleaner's user interface is professional and intuitive. A link to an ample Online Help feature is included, but we were able to jump right in with this program. Four options run down the left side of the window: Cleaner, … Read more

Efficient organizer for manly types

Efficient Software's personal organizer comes in several versions, including freeware editions that offer most of the functionality but fewer features than the full versions. There are also versions optimized for men and women, Efficient Lady's Organizer Free and Efficient Man's Organizer Free. It's the same program, except that the ladies' version is decorated with pink hearts while the men's version is skinned in bolder, starker tones. Sure, it'd be easy to joke about gendered software, but at least there's a choice that doesn't involve a default theme that looks more like a … Read more

Fast copy tool

FastCopy (64-bit) is a slim but powerful freeware file-copying utility for 64-bit Windows editions. It can copy large files at close to the hardware-defined read/write limit without hogging system resources. To that end, it uses few system resources itself, and it doesn't use MFC or any OS caches. It automatically selects one of two copying methods, depending on whether the destination directory is on the same hard disk or a different disk as the source directory. When source and destination are the same, the program writes to a buffer that can be configured via a slider on the … Read more

Good scheduler with bubbly personality

Efficient Lady's Organizer Free is a free program that manages your contacts, appointments, schedules, and other important parts of your personal life like birthdays and holidays. It includes a Calendar, Notes, Diary, and other features common to personal organizers, as well as some less common ones like password protection and a password generator. It has the same basic interface as virtually identical editions, with the exception of a pink-hued interface and the liberal application of hearts and bubbles to the program's skin. While it's not for everyone, plenty of ladies (and gentlemen) will find it a refreshing … Read more

Tiny timer

Although we're always impressed with software that delivers a wide array of useful features, we also recognize that sometimes you need a simple program that does a few things well. Moo0 SimpleTimer is a basic alarm clock and timer program that will sound an alarm or perform a few other basic tasks at the designated time. It's nothing fancy, but it works well for what it is.

The program's interface is basic and pretty easy to figure out, although we would have liked it if some of the more vaguely labeled buttons had pop-up tool tips. Users … Read more
