Review: Carbon - App Sync and Backup stores copies of your vital data

Helium App Sync & Backup saves copies of your vital data for you if you don't want to do it, yourself. It includes an app backup in addition to backing up your sensitive files, but it's a major pain to set up. It takes most of the appeal of automatic backup away.

Helium App Sync & Backup is made mostly for rooters, but it will work with some unrooted phones, too. To be sure it works with yours, check developer options in your settings menu and see if you can turn on USB debugging. If you can't, … Read more

iTunes 11.0.3 update beefs up MiniPlayer's album art

A new update to iTunes on Thursday adds two new features to Apple's MiniPlayer and improves performance for users with large libraries.

Version 11.0.3, which went out as a free update on Mac and PC, has a new feature that lets you tweak the MiniPlayer to show album art with the player controls hidden. When you mouse over the player, the controls fade back into view. It also brings back the MiniPlayer progress bar, one of a handful of features Apple took out in the jump to iTunes 11.

Other changes include now showing album art in … Read more

Review: Compress and extract files with Keka for Mac

Users who handle large files may need an application to compress and extract them. Keka for Mac performs all of the functions expected of a file archive application, and has many options that would be useful for advanced users.

The program is free, and better yet, comes without any advertisements. The download and installation completed as quickly as expected. There did not appear to be any technical support or product updates available, and furthermore, there were no instructions, which less experienced Mac users might find disappointing since the program's options can be confusing. The user interface also lacks helpful … Read more

Zombiewood 1.0.3 Review

There are a lot of zombie games in the App Store these days. With the success of certain TV shows and movies, it seems as if every major release has a zombie mode, and certain games are built with zombies in mind. Zombiewood is one such game, providing a unique, engaging, and often quite funny take on the classic zombie video game formula in a package that is perfect for the iPad.

Zombiewood pits you, a stuntman eager to prove his mettle, against a city filled with zombies. Each "scene" is a mission that has you kill zombies, … Read more

Zoho Projects 1.0.3 Review

Those who are using Zoho, an online suite of office tools and applications, may be looking for a mobile app that lets them check their projects on the go. Zoho Projects is an application that is designed to enable the user to view projects online. While this program works quite well, its limited usefulness almost makes the app pointless.

While the installation goes smoothly, this application doesn't seem to offer many useful features. Users cannot change a meeting or edit a document. In fact, they can't change anything. Zoho Projects simply lets the user view a feed of … Read more

4 Pics 1 Word Puzzle Plus 1.0.3 Review

"Three of these things belong together; three of these things are kinda the same." Kids who remember the classic "Sesame Street" song and game already know the basic premise of 4 Pics 1 Word Puzzle Plus, a new edition of the popular title from Second Gear Games: Compare and match images to deduce the correct answer. But unlike One Of These Things, this free Android app doesn't show you the answer directly. Your job is to identify the word that all four pictures represent. The pictures appear one by one, and you get extra credit … Read more

Intelligent Ringer 1.0.3 Review

No one wants to be the person whose phone goes off in the middle of an exam or important meeting. Intelligent Ringer claims it can help by adjusting your ringer based on the noise around you. It's doesn't work 100 percent of the time, but it's reliable and customizable enough to be worth the download.

In order for this app to work its magic, it has to be on all of the time. It includes an always-on status bar notification, too. It saves battery life by only making big changes when your phone actually rings. Though you … Read more

App A Day 1.0.3 Review

Not too many services on the market provide an easy way of discovering new applications. Most users tend to open the Google Play Store and search for a specific application or simply browse until something catches their eye. App A Day helps the average Android user discover applications that they wouldn't normally look for. This includes all categories of applications from games to utilities. Featured apps are seemingly random and are based on reviewer recommendations.

Finding the right app through Google Play Store can be time consuming. With App A Day the guesswork is taken care of and one … Read more

Sidebar Lite 3.1.0.3 Review

As very valuable real estate, the home screen of a mobile device contains a user's favorite widgets and the most frequently-visited applications and allows quick access to information. All of these, however, take up a lot of space. Sidebar Lite comes in handy because it allows an extra strip of app icons. It can quickly be accessed, but is normally hidden.

Sidebar Lite loads immediately and requires no additional setup other than adding applications to the strip. The bar, itself, is accessed by simply swiping the left edge of the screen inward. The sidebar has a translucent look to … Read more

Kiwi for Mac 3.0.3 Review

For users of the Twitter-like social network App.net, applications for the Mac are difficult to find. Kiwi for Mac allows reading and drafting of posts and manages the service well for those who are members.

Available as a free trial version with a banner, the full version requires a payment of $9.99. Despite the lack of a native installer, we had no trouble installing and setting up Kiwi for Mac. Upon startup, the user is prompted to enter an App.net password to begin. There are no instructions, but the program is easy to use. A menu at … Read more
