$599

At $499, is Microsoft's Surface tablet priced to move?

Surface tablet pricing will start at $499, Microsoft confirmed today. But is that low enough to entice reams of buyers?

Right off the bat, that price does have at least two things going for it. One, it comes with 32GB of storage not 16GB like the identically priced Apple iPad. Two, it comes with Microsoft Office -- for now that means Microsoft Office Home and Student 2013 RT Preview. (The final Office version "will be installed via Windows Update when available," according to Microsoft.)

However, that price doesn't include the slick 3mm-thick Touch Cover (the combination keyboard/… Read more

Most powerful Ferrari ever? I'll take two, please.

Ferrari just rolled out a short teaser video announcing the dawning of "a new era of extreme V-12 cars." Speculation around the 'Net indicates that the Italian automaker will be pulling the wraps off of the successor to its 599 grand tourer: the F620 GT.

Expect the new vehicle to carry its V-12 engine--possibly sourced from or based on the V-12 that powers the Ferrari FF shooting brake--up front and under an elongated hood. Like the 599 it aims to replace, the new model will probably also send its power exclusively to the rear-axle. And if this … Read more

Will Kindle Fire kill the $500 tablet?

Will Amazon's $199 Kindle Fire reset the tablet market, rendering the $500 tablet obsolete?

Let me preempt any challenges from Apple iPad folks. Yeah, I know, Apple will continue to sell the iPad at $499, $599, and $699. And, yes, Apple is slated to ship more than 12 million iPad 2s in the current quarter. Android rivals like Motorola's Xoom or Toshiba's Thrive aren't even close.

With that out of the way, the most immediate impact will be on the pricey Android guys. "I think [the Kindle Fire] resets the bar," Carter Nicholas, CEO of market researcher eDataSource told CNET this week.

To expand on Nicholas' argument, why buy a $500 Xoom if you can get most of what you need from a $199 Fire or a $199 Samsung Galaxy Tab? Or a $249 Nook Tablet? Or a 10-inch Lenovo IdeaPad for $349.99? … Read more

Ferrari 599FXX sets new 'Ring record

Ferrari mostly sat silent while the coveted Nurburgring Nordschleife lap record bounced between Porsche, Nissan, and Dodge for the last few rounds. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, the Italian Stallion threw down the gauntlet with an impressive lap in the ultra-hot, 700-horsepower Ferrari 599XX, the first production car to lap the famous Green Hell in under seven minutes.

Stopping the clock at 6 minutes, 58.16 seconds, the 599XX is sickeningly fast. However, unlike the 911s, GT-Rs, and Vipers that have just had their collective worlds crushed, the 599XX isn't exactly street legal. This raises some interesting questions about … Read more

The Ferrari 599XX at NAIAS 2010

Ferrari has a history for making limited edition vehicles and the history continues with the new 599XX. And this 599XX is EXTREMELY limited - reportedly only 20 or so will be available for purchase. It appears to be designed specifically for racing purposes with its F1-oriented design. And while the 599 has debuted in previous venues, here it is for your viewing pleasure straight outta the North American International Auto Show held just a month ago in Detroit. With its limited release, I'm going to make this blog limited as well and let the video here examine and explain … Read more

World's cheapest Blu-ray Disc?

A lot of people like to complain about the premium you have to pay for Blu-ray Discs, but Blu-ray price watchers should take heart in the $5.99 sale price on the "Heathers" Blu-ray at Amazon.

As one might expect from a disc that wasn't known for having particular good video quality on the DVD, this Blu-ray doesn't pack much visual punch. When Hi-def Digest's writer Kenneth Brown reviewed the disc back in November 2008, he was disappointed with the video quality but found it passable.

"Vibrant reds punctuate the experience, but the remaining … Read more

Ferrari set to unveil hybrid

Ferrari will unveil a hybrid at the Geneva Motor Show in March, the company's chairman confirmed Thursday.

Rumors of a hybrid Ferrari prototype based on the Ferrari 599 GTB, which debuted at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show, have long been making the rounds.

Ferrari filings with the European Patent Office for a "4WD system with hybrid propulsion" were reported in June. At the time, Ferrari confirmed it was developing hybrid technology and hinted at a release within the year, but did not specify when.

Since then, there has been much speculation (and outrage by some purists) about … Read more

Cracked like ice: Chinese porcelain-inspired Ferrari 599

Inspired by Ge Kiln porcelain, this one-off Ferrari 599 gets a special paint job by Chinese artist Lu Hao. The method for creating Ge Kiln was practiced in the Song Dynasty (between 960 and 1279). The unique look resembles cracked ice.

Several autoblogs today reported the car sold for $2 million at a charity auction.
