Droid Incredible arrives early for few, impresses many

Thanks to a computer glitch, a handful of lucky Verizon Wireless customers found themselves getting the HTC Droid Incredible more than a week before its official launch date.

According to a few users in AndroidForums, their new Verizon handset arrived on Tuesday and Wednesday, days ahead of the scheduled April 29 date. After a little nay-saying and provocation, a user by the name of SoSmarmy decided to film himself powering up the phone. As I gather it, the number of users who have received their Droid Incredible was minimal and the glitch has since been fixed.

HTC Desire coming to U.S. Cellular

We missed this little nugget earlier in the week, but we still think U.S. Cellular customers will find it of interest.

Using its Facebook page to announce the news, the carrier revealed that it will offer the HTC Desire this summer after the device has gone through testing. The Desire, which was introduced at Mobile World Congress 2010, is an Android 2.1 smartphone similar to the Nexus One but with HTC Sense.

In addition to the Desire, U.S. Cellular also teased that it would offer another yet-to-be-named Android device in the future. What could it be?

1080p video capture coming to HTC phones soon

During the launch of its HTC Smart, Desire, and Legend devices in South Africa, HTC local managing director Quinton Leigh revealed that the company was preparing mobile phones that could record 1080p HD video.

Currently, mobile phones that record HD video are restricted to 720p resolution. These include the Samsung i8910 HD and Sony Ericsson Vivaz. According to Leigh, HTC's models that do full-HD capture will possibly be available by the second quarter of 2011.

Given the amount of technology manufacturers are putting into handsets, it's not surprising we will one day hit full-HD video capture. What would … Read more

Sprint's Hero getting Android 2.1 in early May

If a pair of recently leaked photos are correct, Sprint's HTC Hero may only be a few short weeks away from getting the Android 2.1 update. The images show screens from an internal Sprint system that indicate that "the much-anticipated Android 2.1 software is coming in early May."

Indeed, it's been a long wait for many Hero users. We can trace the start of the rumors as far back as December when Sprint said they'd have an upgrade in the first half 2010.

Sprint remained largely mum on the rumors until earlier this … Read more

Friday Poll: Got a name for HTC's next phone?

This week, on its Facebook page, Taiwan-based handset vendor HTC asked fans for help naming its next phone.

Since the Razr and the iPhone, manufacturers are thankfully giving their handsets real names instead of monikers like the T4-839i or the 4Fgi0s319zl3 or the EIEIO.

Instead, we get names like the Glide and the Touch. Much better.

Now it's your turn to help. To the right are the names HTC fans can vote on (Jovi, Zeal, Wildfire, or Festi), and we encourage you to go do so. But just for good measure, we've thrown in a few ideas of … Read more

Help HTC pick a name for its next phone

It's funny. I was just IMing with my dear colleague Jasmine France this morning about how companies come up with product names (spurred on by the Droid Incredible announcement) when I stumbled upon this Engadget Mobile article.

HTC is turning to its fans for help with picking out a name for a new device the company is cooking up in the lab and posted a poll on its Facebook page. Unfortunately, there are no details about the new phone, but you can choose from one of possible names: Jovi, Zeal, Wildfire, or Festi. We're not particular fans of … Read more

HTC and Verizon officially announce Droid Incredible

After an early slip up, HTC and Verizon Wireless officially introduced HTC's latest Android smartphone on Thursday, the Droid Incredible.

The Droid Incredible will hit stores on April 29 for $199.99 with a two-year contract and after a $100 mail-in rebate. It runs Android 2.1 and the latest version of HTC Sense. The latter includes such features as a new Leap screen where you can view thumbnail versions of all seven home screens for easy switching, a FriendStream widget, and group contacts. All should run smoothly given the smartphone's 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor.
