With summer in full swing, now is the perfect time to go camping. When I was younger, it was a tradition in my family to go find a spot in the middle of nowhere, try desperately to set up a tent before it rains, and eat charred food that even squirrels wouldn't touch. Then in the morning we would rise from our piles of nylon and sit around the campfire sipping coffee that had the consistency of tar. Now that I've reached the age where I'm ready to take my family into the woods against their wishes, … Read more
This device is billed as a Waffle Dogger/Crepe On A Stick Maker, but I think that might be a little shortsighted. All food tastes better when it's served on a stick; it's a well-known fact. How an appliance like this doesn't have a name such as the "Stick-o-Later," or even the "Tastee-Stick" is beyond me. Instead, the manufacturer, Cecilware, includes this model in its waffle-maker line as the rather vague sounding WD-120. One thing for certain, though, is that whatever the name, this high-class iron would be put through the paces in … Read more
If you are like me, your patio has more in common with a dirty playground than the "indoor living room with complete kitchen amenities," that appliance maker Dacor envisions.
That's a nice vision. If it's your vision...and a big ol' cooler on the patio or porch doesn't cut it during backyard parties, and a full-size fridge is totally out of the question (next to the garden is rather excessive), this refrigerator from Dacor might be the thing for you.
This front-loading Kenmore HE5t steam washer promises to clean better with blasts of hot steam. And with a roomy 4 cubic feet of washing space, this king-size plus washer easily tackles a king-size quilt.
At about $1,699, the energy-efficient steam model is pricier than the Kenmore HE5t king-size model without the steam, which retails at about $1,299.
The steam washer combines cleaning with SteamCare technology that "virtually eliminates the need for pretreating," clothes stained with everything from blood to oil, according to the company.
The washer works by slowly heating the water and releasing hot steam … Read more
Samsung is exploring the world of designer refrigerators. The company has enlisted the help of Jasper Morrison, a designer with a knack for slick modern tableware, electronics, lighting, and anything else he turns his mind to.
His work on the Samsung Side-By-Side refrigerator line has made for appliances that wouldn't look too out of place in a museum exhibit. Samsung will be selling them in a variety of finishes, but--based on the pictures on Morrison's site--the true design aficionado will want one in white.
Beyond the smooth, minimalistic appearance of the Samsung fridge, it offers plenty of … Read more
Combination appliances always freak me out. I can't help but imagine someday everything will be fused into one gigantic (I suppose I should say ginormous) monstrosity that can cook, clean, and even eat all of our meals for us. Little did we know that when manufactures first started putting seemingly innocuous little clocks into their devices that we were paving the way for our eventual robot overlords.
Appliance paranoia aside, this particular device does seem like a mostly good idea. The microwave has long been heralded as the go-to cooking device for heating up food in a flash, but … Read more
It's looking like the end of an era--or a century--for GE, which is drawing interest overseas in its 101-year-old appliance unit.
LG's CEO Yong Nam is considering a deal. "We are looking into it very carefully. I cannot share with you more than that," Nam commented cryptically at a news conference today.
Meantime, there's word that China-based Haier Group, which made an unsuccessful bid for Maytag in 2005, is also eyeing the unit, which might fetch between $4 billion to $8 billion, according to reports.
So what does it mean for consumers of this brand? … Read more
