Google boasts 4 billion hours of YouTube viewing per month

YouTube viewers watched 4 billion hours of the site's videos per month in 2012, a Google executive boasted during Google's fourth-quarter earnings call today.

Nikesh Arora, Google's senior VP and chief business officer, highlighted the big number along with a bunch of other favorable YouTube figures.

The video-hosting service is now available on 400 million mobile devices, Arora said, adding that "YouTube is well positioned for today's multiscreen world."

He said video has been a "key" element for advertising brands. YouTube saw a bump in advertising last year. Its top 100 advertisers … Read more

'Glee' accused of ripping off indy YouTube singer

"That's mine!"

"No, it isn't! It's mine!"

Such is the dialogue I imagine the writers of "Glee" would pen to describe a slight kerfuffle between its own creators and Jonathan Coulton.

Coulton enjoys a bit of fame on YouTube. He writes tunes like "Code Monkey." He created the themes of Portal video games.… Read more

YouTube said to be investing cash in Vevo

Word has it that YouTube is looking to throw some cash in the direction of the music video site Vevo, according to AllThingsD. If these rumors are true, it shows that YouTube is increasingly moving toward the content market.

YouTube was supposedly courting Vevo last May and is now reportedly ready to make an investment, according to AllThingsD. If indeed the video giant does partner with Vevo, the way consumers view content on the site will supposedly stay the same -- which means watching big label music videos for free.

Vevo was tallied as the third most-watched video site in … Read more

Crafting spectacular high-end amplifiers in NYC

Alex Chorine built his very first amplifier when he was 15, and one amp led to the next. He kept building amps for friends and friends of friends. This was in the Soviet Union, where there was no established high-end audio industry. Chorine went on to earn an electrical engineering degree from the Moscow Institute of Technology, and started working with TVs, but audio was his passion. He took on side projects building guitar and bass amplifiers and pro sound systems. He modified European VCRs to work with Russian TVs. He came to the U.S. in 1992, and a … Read more

Samsung's HW-F750 stuffs tubes in a sound bar

Samsung's obsession with tubes started with last year's CES darling, the DA-E750, and now the company is adding vacuum tube amplifiers to home theater systems and even sound bars.

The newly announced Samsung HW-F750 is dubbed the "world's first sound bar with a vacuum tube amp," which is technically true: like last year's models, it has a tube preamplifier paired with a digital amplifier. In any event, the difference is largely academic, as I didn't find that the DA-E750's tubes added a distinctively analog sound, although it was a good-sounding tabletop system.… Read more

YouTube makes brief return to Pakistan after 3-month ban

YouTube made a brief reappearance in Pakistan yesterday after a three-month absence.

The video-sharing service, which was blocked by that country's government in September, was available to Internet users in Pakistan for somewhere between three minutes and three hours on Saturday, depending on which media outlet one believes. The ban on the site, which has been blocked since refusing to pull a clip that mocks the prophet Muhammad, was lifted then reinstated after it was found to still host "blasphemous" content.

YouTube was blocked in Pakistan on September 17 after the Middle East erupted in protests in … Read more

'Gangnam Style' the first video to hit 1B YouTube views

The wildly popular "Gangnam Style" music video by Psy has gone where no YouTube video has gone before.
