AT&T: Ban on unlocking phones won't affect our customers

AT&T said today that its customers shouldn't fear the law against unlocking phones because the carrier will do the unlocking for them.

As part of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, the Library of Congress has ruled it illegal for people to unlock their own phones, a decision that has irked consumer advocacy groups and prompted a petition to the White House to throw out the ban. The law, however, won't have any effect on AT&T customers, the company said in a blog post today.

"While we think the Librarian's careful decision was … Read more

T-Mobile reportedly plans layoffs ahead of MetroPCS merger

Thanks to T-Mobile USA's expected closure of its merger with MetroPCS, the newly combined company is going to find itself with more employees than it knows what to do with.

Actually, it seems the No. 4 U.S. wireless carrier already has a pretty good idea what it will do with some of them, and it involves pink slips. T-Mobile is expected to begin layoffs at its Bellevue, Wash., headquarters as early as tomorrow that could result in the elimination of more than 100 jobs in marketing and other departments, according to The Seattle Times, which first reported on … Read more

T-Mobile fires back at AT&T in attack ads

The gloves are coming off at AT&T and T-Mobile.

T-Mobile is running three ads in the nation's largest newspapers directly attacking AT&T for taking "cheap shots" at it. AT&T last week ran an ad titled "The truth about T-Mobile's network" that claimed the superiority of AT&T's own coverage and network speed over those of T-Mobile.

T-Mobile, in turn, took AT&T's ad and ran with it. In one ad, T-Mobile asks, "What keeps AT&T up at night? Apparently us." … Read more

Verizon explores merger with Vodafone, report says

Verizon and Vodafone want to square away their long-standing relationship -- tied together by Verizon Wireless -- this year, according a report from Bloomberg.

Verizon Wireless, which is jointly owned by Verizon and Vodafone, has long been a source of questions over when the two telco giants would resolve the arrangement. Verizon has for years sought to buy out Vodafone's stake in Verizon Wireless, while Vodafone has agitated for a better return from the fast-growing asset.

Verizon and Vodafone now are exploring a range of options, from ending the joint venture to merging the two companies. The two have … Read more

Rumor: T-Mobile to move to no-contract model soon

T-Mobile will move to a no-contract model on March 24, with an announcement as early as Monday -- that is, if a story on blog TmoNews pans out.

In reporting the shift, Tmo cites an unnamed source -- "while we're confident the details are accurate today, they could easily change tomorrow," it says -- and it adds that T-Mobile will also ditch early termination fees ("which makes complete sense when announced with the removal of contracts"). It also reports that the carrier will offer a monthly installment plan on handset purchases that will be in … Read more

T-Mobile USA adds customers but sheds sales in latest quarter

T-Mobile USA managed to grab more customers last quarter, but that achievement didn't translate into higher revenue.

For the fourth quarter, the company saw a net gain of 61,000 customers, compared with a net loss of 526,000 customers a year earlier. The overall news, however, was mixed.

The number of prepaid customers grew for the sixth quarter in a row, with 166,000 additions last quarter. But the number of contract customers dropped by 515,000, compared with a drop of 492,000 in the fourth quarter of 2011.

Total revenue for the quarter reached $4.9 … Read more

Sorry, LTE compatibility in the U.S. still years away

BARCELONA, Spain--Here's the good news: the U.S. wireless industry is working to ensure that you'll eventually be able to take your LTE-enabled phone from one carrier to another and get the same experience.

The bad news: it likely won't happen for a few years.

That's according to T-Mobile Chief Technology Officer Neville Ray, who spoke to CNET in an interview at Mobile World Congress. Ray says the industry is keen on phones that can operate on different carriers, but that there remain a lot of complexities.

The advent of 4G LTE technology was supposed to … Read more

When asked whether the industry could support multiple operating systems, de la Vega affirmed the sentiment: "absolutely."

Wireless carrier T-Mobile expanded its prepaid offerings today with the nationwide launch of GoSmart Mobile, a budget wireless service targeting consumers interested in low-cost unlimited plans.
