Apple's Retina MacBooks now slightly easier to get

Those who ordered one of Apple's new MacBooks with the Retina Display immediately after it was announced at WWDC last month have no doubt had theirs delivered by now. But those who might have held back a week or two were quickly faced with wait times of up to a month.

That seemingly improved overnight, with Apple today reporting ship times of two to three weeks for new orders, MacRumors notes.

The change is significant for one of Apple's notebooks, which are typically in ready supply following a product launch. The high-end machine was a different story though. … Read more

Smartphone display could improve eye diagnoses

Smartphones could soon be used not only to view complex inner-eye photos for diagnoses, but also to take, send, and view pictures of damage to the front of the eye or to eyelids, according to a new study out of Emory University.

Smartphones may even make passe those annual eye doctor visits if their imaging is good enough for diagnosing and planning treatment for a range of eye conditions -- good news for those who, like myself, prefer to perform as many chores as possible (think shopping) from the comfort of my home.

The researchers at Emory collected data on … Read more

In addition to running Windows programs, Parallels has integrated tools that allow for relatively seamless access to your documents from the virtual machine, and with the latest … Read more

Retinafied 13-inch MacBook Pro not a given, but screens on tap

Displays that could be used on a 13-inch MacBook Pro Retina are slated to begin production this quarter, but "business plans" for Apple are not definite yet, an analyst told CNET.

Retina-class 13.3-inch displays with a pixel density of 2,560-by-1,600 are slated for production this quarter (Q3), said Richard Shim, an analyst with DisplaySearch.

But when this would result in a Retina-endowed 13-inch version of the MacBook Pro is unclear at the moment, according to Shim.

Production of the 13.3-inch Retina-class display is about a quarter behind the Retina screen used in the 15.… Read more

Odd speculation persists about 'revised' iPad

Asia-based sources won't quit with speculation about a "revised" model that will fix some of the shortcomings of the third-generation iPad.

Here's the problem: the third-generation iPad's 2,048x1,536 Retina display requires twice as many backlights as the iPad 2, which potentially makes it run hotter and necessitates a bigger battery to achieve roughly the same battery life as the iPad 2.

That bulked up backlight assembly also contributes to a slightly thicker, heavier design than the iPad 2.

Raymond Soneira, the founder, president, and CEO of DisplayMate Technologies, explained the challenges that Apple … Read more

At least three Kindle Fire 2 tablets, one with 4G, on the way

The Kindle Fire 2 will see the Google's Nexus 7 tablet and then raise it, according to an analyst.

Amazon will bring out at least three new Kindle Fire models, according to Richard Shim, an analyst at NPD DisplaySearch.

Shim gets his information from sources in the "supply chain" -- a collection of companies that manufacture components and assemble products. … Read more

Retina Display iMac to debut in October?

An all new iMac will reportedly debut around October, with a high chance of sporting a Retina Display. At least, that's the latest scuttlebutt from DigiTimes.

Citing the usual "upstream supply chain sources," DigiTimes claims that Apple's suppliers will start shipping components for the new iMac this month. Those sources also said that Apple is looking to expand its Retina Display across all product lines, which means the new iMac has a "high chance" of getting the high-resolution screen.

Apple is reportedly pushing the Retina Display for all its products in a bid to … Read more

Maclocks makes first Retina MacBook locking mechanism

Lock system manufacturer Maclocks has developed and released the first locking mechanism for the new MacBook with Retina Display, which offers a unique approach to securing the new systems since Apple didn't include a standard Kensington lock port.

Since laptops are portable they're easily stolen, and if you leave your MacBook unattended in a relatively busy place, you chance someone coming along and snatching it. Even if you have special LoJack software or Apple's Find My Mac feature enabled, it's better to prevent a system from being swiped in the first place.

If you don't … Read more

Adobe: Web standards match 80 percent of Flash features

SAN FRANCISCO--Adobe Systems, retooling as fast as it can for a future of Web publishing and Web apps, sees the technology as mostly caught up to the Flash technology that Adobe previously preferred.

"I think it's close to 80 percent," Arno Gourdol, Adobe's senior director of Web platform and authoring, said in an interview during the Google I/O show here.

Gourdol, who leads Adobe work to embrace Web standards, has a lot on the line as the company tries to make a difficult transition away from the widely used but fading Flash. He's eager … Read more
